If you started at 1080 it's going to be apple wine you end up with not cider, at 1040 it's no where near finished fermenting.

You don't really need any extra sugar when making cider, the apple juice contains enough sugar to make around a 6% brew.

I heard r that sodastream syrup can be used to have different flavours so I am doing a test batch of 2 ltrs of lemonade cider using apple juice and sodastream lemonade syrup

Sounds like a classic scrumpy strength to me.
If I were you, I'd taste it every few days and stop it when it's sweet/dry for your taste and just have it like a still scrumpy.

Unless you wanted to make apple wine..?.

What is it reading now?

My supermarket juice wines start at 1090 and finish below 995 and are usually around the 13% ABV mark, if you let it ferment below 995 its going to be close.

As i said earlier a wine glass not a pint glass for this one
