I'm using my gas burner and 30L pot for the first time today. Thought I'd do an extract weissbier first as I fancied a quick and easy brew day.

Well that was the plan. Got it all set up and going with the full boil volume, 20L. After 40mins it didn't look like boiling ever. Moved it all into the shed and it's fine, think it's too windy outside so was losing too much heat.

Anyway, after a near boil over while adding extract which resulted in a panic and a fair amount of extract on the shed and burner, it's all going nicelly now.

Hallertau mittelfruh hops and wheat extract with a proper yeast, smack pack, not used before so we'll see how that goes.

It's been eventful at any rate. Brew on!

It's always an adventure isn't it. I'm hoping that one day I'll be able to do a stage of a brew with no issues. All of my brews have had at least one 'oops' moment. The first time I used my burco boiler I forgot to turn the tap off after I'd emptied it for the sparge. When I poured the wort into the boiler I lost at least a litre on the floor before I noticed the tap was open

lol
I've been desperate to get rid of that damn table for years. Kids didnt notice it disappearing from their playroom so that's it as far as I'm concerned! It's now brewing kit, not 'craft table'!

Tell you what though, propane burns well dirty, took me ages to clean the pot and my hands are still grey from the sooty sh*te it deposits!

Ahh, a man cave with a proper burner. I can only dream of such things, where it doesn't take an hour to bring my pot to the boil!

It took well over an hour to get up to boiling point so fret not! Still, every days a school day. Next time Ill kick things off with a few litres of boiling water, and use shed instead of great outdoors. As soon as I moved indoors it all got going mush quicker.

Also while I think of it, yeast smack pack was a pain the ass, had to smack the damn thing about 10 times before I was sure the pack was proper smacked. Anyway it swelled up a good un in the end so alls 'swell' that ends 'swell'

Or something.

I use butane with mine for that very reason mate (and cheaper). Cracking burners though aren't they! In the garage I get 36 litres to strike temp in 45 minutes - being out of the wind definitely speeds everything up, and uses less gas.

Ok. Not brill. Some panels were taller than others whigh meant fitting roof was tricky. Also windows are prone to falling out in this windy weather we're having. I bought some sealant today to fix them in, but one has already broke after falling out... Also their customer service was terrible, parts missing which took ages to sort out. The only consolation was that the guys name in customer service was Ray Pornilosa.

only used them twice. and with my basic brewing , not sure yet about the benefits unless totally being near as to what a recipe requires. 2nd time i used , plonked on the tele set top box in the front room and like a balloon in an hour. all a learning curve with yeasts at the minute, but all ways had good results with 04 and 05 safale. stop multi tasking and get on with ya brew. nice one, good luck with it .:-)

Thanks for shed info!
Just been researching washing and re-using yeast is this something you will be doing?

No, don't think I'll put another brew on now til the other side of summer. I might give it a in autumn though, or at least start reusing yeast rather than buying new each time.

Weissbier going like the absolute clappers now, krausen is up against the lid of the fv which I've not had before, and it's only a 19L brew, so there was plenty of headspace too. Airlock going off pretty much continuously.

Is it weird that I could happily sit there for hours watching it blub away?

A little! Don't worry, I've checked on my FV at least half a dozen times today to see it progress, it's got a nice half inch krausen on it now! The business end of fermentation I find quite interesting.

Your brew has made me fancy doing a wheat for summer, the recipe in Greg Hughes book for Witbier looks good.

It's the brew uk extract kit that I'm doing. Gets v good reviews.

It's now gone bonkers, I've got krausen literally exploding out of the airlock. Would make a blow off tube but don't have anything except my siphon to make it from and as I'm away with work then on hols as of next weekend I wont be able to replace it (could mail order it but loathed to pay postage on a siphon!). Lid of fv bulging out worryingly. I've let the pressure out a few times but it builds up again in minutes.

Bit concerned that if it doesn't calm down before I go to bed I'm going to wake up to carnage.

How long is this likely to last?

I have a Beaver Timber (Oban) shed, 18 x 12 on order with imminent delivery.
Boy, am I getting giddy.....
