I have one of the bog standard hand-held bottler cappers, like this:

Am finding it a bit of a nuisance to get the caps on with it TBH, and even managed to break a bottle the other night (I gotta lay off the weights!!).

Are the bench/table top versions much better?

Wish I had just invested in more grolsch type bottles, so much easier!

I use the bog standard one, have got the hang of it with practice, but I've used a bench capper and they are much better.

I use an ancient Boots brand two lever capper. Works really well but you do have to be careful how much pressure you press the levers down with - a while back I managed to completely snap off the neck of one of my bottles.

I had the exact same one as in the OP, and had the same problem. On closer inspection, the metal bits that grip the bottle had bent, which meant that I couldn't get the caps on.

I couldn't afford a bench capper, but bought a Ferrari model from LHBS which has not let me down after over a year and several batches bottled. Was only about £5 more expensive than the Youngs one.

I have teh same one as teh OP.. first few brews I wasted probably 5 or so caps as I struggled to get it quite right but after that I seemed to have got the knack of it..

I had one like w-j that did me fine for years. Then started to bend a few caps so bought this one....

This works fine but for each batch of about 44 bottles there are one or two that only the first w-j type will do! I think it is down to the moulding of the bottle neck. I use a whole mix of recycled. Reading this thread I plan to get a bench type in nine years time.

Bench capper all the way for me! You won't look back after getting one. I have the Ferrari one too. Works with every type of branded bottle no matter what height.
