Hi all,

I'm just starting to build my mash tun from a Coleman cooler and plan to build a copper manifold..

My question is - do I need to solder the joins or can it all just slot together, and then connect to my ball valve with a compression fitting (from copper kettle brewing)?

Cheers

I have soldered the long sides of my manifold, including a 90° bend on each end. The short (transverse) pipes just slot in so that I can take it all apart for cleaning.

Assuming your ball tap thread is 1/2", you could use one of the above. Fit it onto your 15mm pipe, then put the pipe through your tank connector and tighten the compression joint on that. Check your tap fits the 1/2" female first though. As for your manifold - if you just slot it together there is a very good chance it will come apart when you are doughing in your mash, leading to stuck sparges galore. To connect the manifold up I have used a piece of food safe plastic hose jubilee clipped on.
