HI

Do hydrometers stop working after a while?

I have quite a few, as far as i know they work but they are quite old (most were my granddads who has been dead for 20 years so i have no idea how old there are.

Guess my question is, should i get a new one?

thanks

You could simply test it by checking it in normal room temperature tap water, and the reading should be 1.000

Make sure the tap water is at room temperature though (or around 20c) as the temperature can alter the reading.

I appreciate they are old, but they might have a calibration temperature marked on them somewhere. Usually either 15 or 20°c. If they have, that's the temperature of water you need to check them in to see if they are accurate.

I had a wilko one that gave crazy readings after it went in the dish washer and the paper can move in some cheap ones but otherwise they shouldn't change with age.
