Greg Hughes Wheat beer

Very nice beer., very "Wheaty" dont laugh
Underhopped imo,i only used 50g of Citra (ive said this on another thread but thought I'd put it here)
It might be my imagination but im sure i can taste coriander and Orange peel????
Could this be from the Mangrove Jacks Bavarian Wheat Yeast?
If i added another 100g of anything to this it would be stunning, note to self-stop being a tight git.

It's a great packet yeast. I brewed it at banana temps and added 150g amarillo

50g flameout. replace at 5 days then a 5 day 100g dry hop. banana+orange = bubble gum :thumb:

I am defo doing that next time 👍 yes, seems a good yeast,i should have scooped some up and stored it

Yeah, seems a good recipe except hop schedule, maybe its not meant to be hoppy?

I made it and found it great, the best beer I've made to date. I could taste the citra no problem too, the balance was spot on IMO.

Could it be the fact you used Bavarian Wheat yeast? The flavour in American Wheat Beers comes from the hops rather than the yeast in the case of Belgian/German wheat beers somyou would have been better using either a specialist liquid American Wheat yeast or US-05 (which is what I used).

Maybe, im still learning about yeast, i guess the fact it said Wheat of some sort on the packet i thought that will do the trick, must say though, even with the lack of Citra taste, its a belter, not a million miles away from the M&S Belgian Wheat beer, not that im boasting 😁 im finding the Mangrove Jacks yeasts to be quite good

Its maybe a bit like Blue Moon? I will need to do a side by side, ive just found out that Blue Moon is brewed by MillerCoors and its caused a lot of controversy as they are brewing under the guise of a "craft" brewrey

all the MJ yeasts i've had have been great.

for fans of blue moon try gulpener's korenwolf, it's a real step up in lovelyness

Just like all the other breweries do. But up a craft brewery, move production to their main plants but still say it's made elsewhere.

I'm a big fan of Mangrove Jack's. They have brought a lot of great yeasts to market.

The M44 West Coast has overtaken US-05 for me.

Right, just had another,it's my third biab and WOW, this is a cracker of a Wheat beer, every bit as good as a commercial,I actually can't believe I made this,if this had more hops it would be my best ever beer brewed.
I have one question I have asked before, in Greg Hughes book,he recommends a fermentation temp then conditioning temp and time,it's usually 12 degrees ???? He doesn't mention storing beer at room temp at all? Most recipes say 6 weeks conditioning, will the beer still carb or is he just assuming no one is stupid enough to ask this question

I think the bitterness masks the yeast so its meant to have low IBU's. At least the ones served cloudy with the yeast. I have around 3 or 4 crates of various higher hopped experiments in the garage i am never gonna drink. I think if i had used another yeast they would of been drinkable.

What yeast did you use?
I wish I lived in Leicester, are you sure they are undrinkable?

Hi!
Are you saying it needs more bittering hops, or lacks flavour/aroma?
Colin

Alright mate

I wouldn't say it lacked anything,I would be doing it an injustice,However.......
If it had added hops (a dry hop, bitterness is spot on) it would turbocharge it IMO
I said in another thread I'm sure I can taste coriander and orange, that may be my mind playing tricks or the Mangrove Jacks Wheat yeast? Its only got 50g of Citra but another 100g of Amarillo,Mosaic maybe or even just more Citra would be the ticket.
Defo brew again though ,my first two biab were AG kits from Brewstore in Edinburgh, this is way better :thumb:

WLP300 is what i used but switched to wyeast 3068. You would be most welcome to it, not sure if buying all those crates was a good idea. I don't think its undrinkable its just not fresh and i tend to drink the new stuff. I am spoilt for choice really and Wheat beer is meant to be drunk fresh (apparently).
Does anyone know if Raspberry wheat beer keeps? Have plenty of that left too.
