I wondered if anybody knows how I can make the item below operate some lights.
My father lives on the river and wants his mooring lights to come on if someone enters the garden via the river. We tried a PIR but the movement of the boat kept the lights going on and off all night.
I guess it will need to energise a contactor but I don't know what and where to buy the items required?

Many thanks

Yeah get a 24vdc contactor so that you can use the same power supply as the IR beam. Break a 24v supply through the NO contact in the detector and use it to operate the contactor coil to switch the lights on.

Would I be right in thinking that the detectors need a 24v supply?
So I will need to get a 220 - 24v transformer?

1 x Photoelectric Transmitter
1 x Photoelectric Receiver

you will need a DC psu capable of supplying 13.8 to 24v with a 500ma+ rating for each device or with a 1a+ rating if using 1 psu for both sensors.

then use a power relay with the same switching voltage as your device psu ;)

Did you think about pointing it up the garden away from the boat were they would have to walk towards the house

Actually you may need additonal circuitry.

if the NO contacts on the detector are only closed for the duration the beam is broken if you only use a relay then the lights will also shut off once the beam has been restored.

this chap seems to have a solution to a similar problem using a momentary contact switch as an on/off switch .. https://www.eeweb.com/blog/extreme_circuits/momentary-switch-teamed-with-latching-relay

another option would be a timer circuit to switch the lights on for x minutes @ a time??

I never thought of that, yes the timer looks just the job.
I'm a bit surprised there isn't something off the shelf that will do this.

you may also want to add something like

So the lights only come on in the dark

the off the shelf solution is pir's the trick is in mounting them so thier range only covers the area your interested in
