Minimum alcohol per unit prise to raise from from 50p to 65p in Scotland.

No details so far I only caught the end of the article when I switched the car radio on.

The 50p rate in Wales had virtually no effect and in the meantime prices have risen so much that 65p will also have little or no effect.

Cost of alcohol in Scotland to rise as SNP ministers confirm new minimum unit pricing level

Shona Robison said minimum unit pricing was not a "magic bullet" and that access to specialist treatment remained vital for Scots battling addiction.

The cost of buying alcohol in Scotland is set to rise again after SNP ministers confirmed a new minimum unit price of 65p.

Shona Robison, the Deputy First Minister, said action was needed to "reduce the causes and effects of ill health."

If backed by MSPs, a 12-pack of 500ml Tennent's Lager will rise from a minimum of £12 to £15.60 and a 70cl bottle of Famous Grouse will go up to £18.20 from a £14 minimum.

Robison admitted today the policy was not a "magic bullet" in terms of improving health - and accepted that access to specialist treatment services remained vital for Scots battling addiction.

It comes as deaths from alcohol in Scotland are at a 14-year high, with many experts blaming the impact of the coronavirus lockdowns on increasing consumption.

Minimum unit pricing (MUP) is a flagship SNP policy and was fiercely opposed by the Scotch whisky industry when it was first announced in 2012.

You know that maybe there is a bigger underlying problem with UK society if (as the media & politicians would have us believe) everyone is hammered on cheap booze or high on drugs.
Maybe we're no different to anywhere else, but we have a more developed puritanical element and a great live of sticking out misses into other people's business.

What proportion of the people you've bumped into today have been off their títs?

If we get a government that doesn't want to offend minorities alcohol will be banned, meat, cars etc.....
most things could be spun under the pretext of being banned for health reasons with health&safety mopping up the rest.

This could lead to an increase in the number of HB 'ers in scotland.

The problem is when policies are made based on projections without evidence. As devil's advocate could alcohol dependant people cut out food to buy booze instead and if so would that have been ultra processed food (UPF) or good quality food. You could argue that you may swap liver failure deaths vs health harm caused by eating UPF

Minimum price at the moment, 50p per unit means a 5 % bottle of beer in Tesco's would have to be at least 1.25. when it goes up to 65p it'll have to be 1.52. As they're all currently priced at 2.00, it's a story about nothing. Just more blah blah blah from both politicians and the media
