Hi guys, how does everyone store their dry yeast ? I used to just keep the packets in a cupboard but I've been reading lately than you should keep them in the fridge ? Does anyone do this ?
Cheers in advance

Well, it appears that I have found something on which Dunkula and I agree. I only use dry yeast as a backup, but I store it in the freezer compartment of my brewing refrigerator.

Even at room temperature, dry yeast lose viability pretty slowly - I had some sachets of bread yeast that I left in a cupboard for 20 years, and it still gave maybe half the rise of new yeast. So that would imply a very crude loss of 3.5% viability per year.

So I wouldn't sweat it too much, particularly given how most people tend to be tight on cold storage. I keep my brewing yeasts in a fridge compartment, as much for the constant temperature as for the cold - it also means I have my liquid and dry yeasts together which helps inventory management.

I bought 8 winebuddy kits and after 2 years the yeast was utterly dead. It's in huge packets with tons of nutrient so i don't know if them being in together kills it quicker. I had a tin of bread yeast that was dead after 18 months you know, the Allinsons with the plastic cap on. and it had been opened. I didn't freezer either of those. I put my Wilko yeast compound in the freezer just in case.

I've found that opened and stored at room temp Allinsons bread yeast can go bad within 3 months - had some pizza dough that didn't rise at all. My solution has been to make more pizza and bread so I get through them faster! I should prob keep it in the fridge, since I keep my brew yeast in the chest freezer.
