So who is willing to share their secret sauce starter words?
Personally unless I get lots of hits with the first one my first two words are 'BEATS' and then either 'PRION', 'LAUGH', or 'COUGH' for the same reason as @scomet for the vowels. Mind you I've read about starting with AUDIO for that reason but that feels too technical and misses the chance of catching some of the more common consonants early.

I also try to start with words that have at least a couple of vowels in. I try to avoid words with repeating vowel s or consonants to start. I don't have go to start words as it were. Things like STEAM, HOIST, BOARD etc. You also need to be mindful that spelling is American English.

willing to share their secret
Pious, Roate Brake + Rinse, Loath and Bumpy were mentioned above. For the second word I will ponder on the results of #1, and I will admit to using my scrabble letters to help me think when i'm stuck! Part of the fun is thinking up a good word 2 and watch those letters pop up..

I like pious, (3 vowels). If no matches, the next try can have an EA word.
I normally start with OUTER.

Been doing them for about 2 weeks.
The Mrs has been doing them for longer.

Be careful and don't get too competitive to avoid family arguments.

It does highlight my lack of spelling ability, especially the other day when I told the Mrs the only word I could think of wouldn't work & was informed that I was correct but my spelling was the problem.
