That's cos it's not - it deprives you of one of your limited chances to try one of the letters with a very skewed distribution in its "favourite" place in a 5-letter word, and getting green letters really reduces the list of possible "targets". Don't think just in terms of line 1, you're not going to be getting it in 2 lines anyway, and it's been calculated that on average even with "perfect" play, the average is 3.5 lines or so. So in golf terms, think of 4 lines as "par", and 3 is a "birdie".

This is interesting especially the percentages on positioning. I know when I was at school and we used to do some 'code-breaking' that there were 6 letters most commonly used in English but this was for all words not just 5 letter ones so I don't know how well it holds up for Wordle. My opening line uses 4 of the 6 but there is a word which uses 5, I'm just not sure how it would work after reading Northern Brewer's post. I might try it for a few as a test.

How do I make that "smudge" or is it not available to a regular member?
I had started a suggested "Wordle Spoiler" thread here that people could use to post and hide spoilers..... you could then post your spoilers on a spoiler specific thread and not have them in the main thread, but ironically @DocAnna thought it was a bad idea 😄

I had a play with the spoiler code on there to see what was possible.

Simple text works fine with the "Inline" (smudge/fuzzy) spoiler code, but if someone wanted to post the graphic, it would need to be inside the the "standard" spoiler code. As Chippy says, they are in the drop down option on the formatting bar next to the smiley.

It's pretty easy to work out and I can post instructions on the other thread if needed.

For the Wordle answers it's either 3 or 8/9, depending where you cut off, and as I say before, you want to be looking more at getting as many of the top 10 in the first two lines, but allowing yourself to try and get the ones with skewed location distributions in their "favourite" locations to maximise your chance of a green square :

A bit frustrating again today - I'm thinking of taking a wee bit of a break from sharing my attempts here. I do the Wordle for a bit of fun and for myself, but at the moment it's making me a bit frustrated when I can't get it in a 3 which is just daft I know 😖

I feel the same - especially when you know you are really good at English. Annoying isn't it lol

You really shouldn't, that's a classic case of anchoring on an inappropriate target. As I said in #196 above, bots with "perfect" play or something near to it have an average of 3.5 or so, you really should regard 4 as "par" and 3 as a "birdie". I suspect that people will tend to post their good ones and somehow omit their not-so-good ones, so the average of the ones you see posted will have a much lower average than reality. Another example of "the Instagram effect". So for full disclosure, I got today's in 4 (and inside I'm cringing as this is the first time I've ever posted a Wordle-gram):
