According to the guardian it was a lack of staff that caused the backlog.

Doug Bannister, the Port of Dover’s chief executive, previously blamed French border control officials, Police aux Frontières, for failing to provide sufficient numbers to staff the passport booths – an accusation denied by the French.
Only four of nine booths for the French border controls for travellers leaving the UK were reported to have been staffed on Friday morning, which port officials say led to the backlogs.

Are you sure it was not Brexit ?:laugh8::beer1:
As I understand it (definitely not an expert) a lot of industries (travel, hospitality, etc.) are struggling for staff as they've generally relied on relatively cheap labour from EU countries. Since Brexit many of those have moved away from the UK, possibly accelerated by the pandemic lockdowns.

And as usual, Boris (and Sunak and Truss) have been conspicuously absent and silent in the topic... As if it wasn't their problem to do anything about it 😠

A storm in a teacup. It would seem. Over here, there are just as many Brits as any other summer. Gîtes and campsites are full. We're full. Plenty of Dutch, Germans and Belgians, too. No problems reported from any of the other crossings via Brittany Ferries for example, on either side. Must be something specific about Dover and Folkestone.
Why are people still using P&O, by the way, after their Shocking way of treating their staff? Don't people care or had another company taken over the route?

Because they are the cheapest. People will rant and rave about principles, but when it comes down to it, they won't actually care what a company does if it saves them £10 on a cost of a ticket.

People are selfish and have very short memories when it suits.

It always boils my **** when the rail workers etc strike and they interview the plebs at the station and they always say "why do they always strike at busy times we need to get to work" or "why are they striking they earn a lot more than me" . aheadbutt

The French have always hated us and now even more for Brexit... they are doing it on purpose.
Are you having a laugh, @AccoBrew ? I've never seen the slightest bit of dislike, let alone hatred, against the Brits. We're welcomed with open arms here. When brexit happened, it was met with total bewilderment, not malice. Now the French understand it a bit more and they've got to know Boris, they blame the politicians rather than the people. The French, I have to say, have a very healthy distrust of politicians in general. Especially their own.
Of course there is racism in the cities, but it's largely against folk from the African continent rather than fellow Europeans. I haven't read today's press, but I saw no mention of the situation at Dover over the weekend. It's a local event. Unimportant in the grand scheme of things. Unless you're a woman stuck in a car for many hours, of course, and bursting for a wazz. I do worry about that.

France has its quirks and weirdnesses, just like anywhere else. And the beer, by and large, is carp. But Brit-bashing isn't on their hymn sheet.
Yet.
