I've recentlt moved from 5L stovetoppers to 10L stove toppes as I've found they take exactly the same amount of time to make but you get twice as much beer

I'm aware that in the states you can get a small plastic conical for 2L-2.5L US gallons. These would be perfect for me and my brewlength. Except I haven't seen any in any UK online shops. Anyone come across them?

not come accross those before, and i doubt the value of the conical shape with such a small volume, its not as if your loosing litres to deadspace in flat bottomed fv's (or are you), small volume fv's are much easier to tip and keep steady fro the racking off or draining ;)

Wth an ag brew you could easily fill that conical base with trub before any yeast has settled leaving you with a racking port below the sediment level perhaps?? its the o2 free ability to dump trub and harvest yeast that are the 2 main benefits from employing a conical, neither of which seem do-able with the product linked to.

But if it tickles your fancy go for it ;)

you may want to look at pheasant/poulty feeders tho which are conical shaped hdpe containers which could be modded with a dump valve and racking port ;)

just remember a us gallon is 3.75l not 4.5l, and i would check out aliexpress and ebay before ordering from the US, unlike many far east suppliers US businesses tend to fill out customs forms diligently including every $cost they can in the declared value and employ couriers who delight in charging you a 'nice' additional sum to administer your vat payments to hmrc..

Thanks for the info about conicals Fil :thumb:

After my wort is boiled I put it into two 5L FVs to no-chill overnight. When it's cool the next day I simply pour/decant the sweet wort off the break material at the bottom of the 5L FV's into a 10L FV. Doing this mean that their is more or less only yeast at the bottom of the FV after fermentation, so if I had the brewdemon the trub (which would be mostly yeast) wouldnt be above the racking port,I dont think.

Your right I loose nothing to dead space as I simply put a ramakin under one side of the FV to keep it tipped.

Seeing as I've already got rid of almost all of the trub during transfer to the 10L FV and I havest yeast by pulling a 250ml amount of fermenting wort from just below the krausen (I assume you've seen this harvesting method on Jims and other forums?), then a conical is a bit pointless for me. What I liked was being able to package without having to bother with a syphon, but I could just get a bucket with a tap to do that. I just thought a conical might add some other benefits too (plus I like the look of it, although it's not shiny)

The poultry feeder looks an interesting idea. I'll have to look into it

They look ok any linkys to them with price?

sorry it was an image lifted from google after a quick search for 'pheasant/poultry feeder' the other pics prominent were all diy bucket or barrel jobbies..

Having google 'the advantages of a conical fermenter' I totally dont need one (doesn't mean I dont want one ). As I'm doing the major advantages, trub removal & yeast collection, anyway

What is your packaging format myqul? Bottle, pressure barrel, corny?

Second hand corny kegs make cheap SS FVs. Cut 1/2 inch of the dip tube to avoid trub pickup. I have a 11L of Mild currently fermenting in one at 18c with a pressure release valve on the gas outlet, set at 13 PSI. Once fermentation is complete it will have also carbed itself to the right volume ready for crash cooling, then bottling via beer gun. I could also serve from the keg or transfer to another corny, all with low to zero oxygen pickup.

bottle/growler/mini keg

The SStech 3.5g/13L Mini Brew Buckets look pretty good. Pricey at £110, but will last a lifetime.

Making a custom Fv from a stockpot and stainless ball valve fitting is worth considering.

Although you'd still need a bottling/priming bucket with both of those.

I did look at the ones you linked to when I was going through this same quandary, as I have a sister in the US. I went off them though as they don't allow trub/yeast removal. So aren't truly a conical Fv.
