being a tight wad, I ordered and received another 25Kg of Hookhead malt. At 18 pounds it seems a bargain. Anyway I had a sniff, as one does, and had a light bulb moment. How does the smell compare to Maris Otter? So I got 2 samples out and did a scientific test. I mention this because we all like science, don't we?.
Anyway, they smell completely different, and not in a small way either...just completely different. There you go "science at work" not.
 
Funny I have their Propino malt,Minch pale ale malt and their pilsner malt and the difference is night and day.

They all have different smells,aromas and tastes.

Interesting. Do you think it affects the final taste of the beer assuming
you made a single hop, single malt brew??

So what's the Propino like? I ask because HBC are knocking it out at £16 a sack just for black Friday, so I've sent off for some. My stinginess is going to backfire on me one day. To the OP, my last 3 sacks of malt were Minch and whilst I can't compare it with MO cos I haven't used it for ages, it makes great beer and with outrageous efficiency.
 
The only SMaSH I've done was using the Minch Pale ale malt with Cascade hops and absolutely delicious at first but had lost its bite after a month.
Brewed a Vienna Lager using the pilsner malt and have tried two bottles a week apart and for my first attempt I actually like it and tastes nothing like the usual stuff you would buy but is carbonated though.not holding the head for long.
Brewed a stout with both the.Minch and Propino and the Minch won me over though I also have a Chocolate,Coffee and vanilla stout using the Propino and is lacking depth of colour though tastes quite nice but needs bottled as I only added the vanilla and then there is also a Popcorn Porter I brewed the other day using Propino,Vienna and Munich malts,so there is a bit of complexity going on.

The efficiency of the Minch is around 82% and best I've had with Propino is around 75%.

On the subject if malt, I went to a Marstons Homebrew Tour meeting last night, and the Marstons brewer there said that last year's malts, across the board of all suppliers, was poor and caused problems, and they are finding this year's harvests much improved.

How long does it take to get grain from field to homebrew store shelf?

Interesting comment. Im really not sure about my results, only cos Im mainly brewing different beers, so its difficult to make comparisons or replaceable results.
Im going to use this lot of Minch and log everything on the puter

They have also got their Minch malt on special,but at £16 a bag it's worth a few and get a few extra House Stout's on the go and maybe even an Imperial Gunge house Stout!!!!!:whistle:
 
You've compared the smell, try this out. You can make grain teas to compare the flavour of (base) malts.Just steep some of each grain in some hot water. I've never tried it though.
 
I know. I usually try tasting anything/everything. Not sure why I haven't bothered to try this out

I think I'll have a go at this. I've only got Golden Promise, Biscuit and Medium Crystal (and of course cornflakes) to have a go with but should be fun
