As a Belgian I find the whole thing a fine and funny farce.

As resident of a small country, which has been occupied twice in the twentieth century, and knowing enough history, I find it appalling that any one (also on the continent) can be against the EU, as it functions as a moderator between countries and their differences.

I concur that the commission needs to be reformed, but that needs to be done by the European parliament, and it should be up to the respective governments to set them in motion. But every country wants to take advantage of the EU, without helping trying to make the best of the EU.

You missed the part where they wanted to found an EU army, an EU constitution and an EU president?

The problem for the UK was that we were promised reforms that never happened, most of Europe is scared of losing out so didn’t see the changes as good for them, most countries are in it for themselves first and the union second, this works reasonably well as long as there is benefits to be had but as the membership grows the burdens become greater.
The EU really needs to bite the bullet and modernise rather then each country trying to screw the system for what they can get

We, along with Malta do most of our trade with countries outside of the EU. Our needs are therefore radically different to all the other European countries. Being a member of the EU holds us back from making advantageous arrangements with our main trading partners. The EU is only of benefit if you want to trade within the EU. We need the ability to help our own businesses to compete in global markets, which is essentially prevented by the EU. The latest suggestion for a move towards a single European state would only disadvantage us further, due to our unique position.

44% of the UKs exports go to the EU, a huge number of big businesses are domiciled in the UK purely for access to the EU and the single market, the trade deals we have through, and negotiated by, the EU are far better than we'd now be able to negotiate in isolation ...it's worth reminding people that a few years ago the US imposed a 160% levy on British high quality steel, the EU stepped in and threatened similar levys on US goods and the US backed down.

...we will go from being part of a 560 million people trading block, to an insignificant 60 million. And let's not forget every country Liam Fox has visited, to cosy up to, have just smiled and shown him the door.

Brexit, without question, will be the most damaging thing to happen to the UK since the Second World War.

It's true that we do more trade with non Eu countries than Eu contries but the difference is not that large and to say most of our trade is with countries outside the Eu is grossly overstating things. More of our imports come from EU Countries than non Eu countries. Anyone wanting to check the figures see HMRC's own figures.

The EU is a United States construct that makes it easier for them to exercise hegemony over the individual countries. This is why autonomy must be sacrificed. Already, a group of essentially appointed people make decisions about your borders etc...and you have zero input or recourse against Brussels. As to whether or not it can succeed is a tenuous topic at best. I read an interesting article shortly after the Brexit vote, and the author stated matter of factly that Britain would not be allowed to leave. There will be a long drawn out process that will end in a second vote that will overturn the original mandate. I will have to wait and see if he is in fact correct, but I applauded Britain making such a well thought out decision to maintain your independence. The Rockerfellers et al are not amused by your snubbing of the onward marching attempt at globalization.

That doesn't surprise me. Give 'the people' the idea that they're in control of this then take the time to persuade them that they were wrong all along. Job done. Brexit should have happened on the day of the vote, not years down the line... which of course may well not happen.

Again, its the powers behind the scene that pull the strings. Democracy ? Im not so sure it really exists anymore. Corporations have legal rights that supercede the rights of the individuals of the countries they operate in. Just look at what is happening with water. Corporations from other countries purchase water rights in other juristictions and you the land owner at times are out of luck. If you try and win back your birthright, you often are forced to compensate the corporation infinitum for income lost. ...

I really don't get why anyone has an issue with that.

My nan keeps banging on about how it's a European super state and we'll all be ruled from Brussels. So? As long as we vote for the parliament, why do we care if they sit in Brussels or London? And this whole federation thing seems to be working just fine for America.

Let's have a European federation! I'm all for it.

No it's not really working for the US. For instance Healthcare.

America's healthcare system is entirely unrelated to the fact it's a federation.

There are many, many things wrong with America. But I can't think of any that can reasonably be blamed on the fact it's a federation.

Big business what us to stay in for cheap labour... and if the likes of Tony Blair and Peter mandelson what us to stay in that should be enough to tell us we should be out out out

I still doubt brexit is gonna happen. I think a win win between remainders and brexiters would be this:

We stay in the EU fully. However, those that wanted to leave can wait in European airports for longer than necessary times, they can pay more for their shopping and when exchanging money for their holiday ask for a poor rate. They can quit their jobs to simulate unemployment, they can ask for poor NHS service and eat food from questionable sources. This will give them the feeling of winning the country back or whatever. The remainers can carry on pre brexit with good exchange rates, short queues etc.

Perfect. Can I nick this?

The best bit is that the pro-Brexit crowd still pay the same tax as everyone else, so everyone's a winner.
