Right guys we have seen a few forwards looking threads, how about one looking back and a few words of warning to us newbies of potential pitfalls etc.

Not looking for dos and don'ts as there are many threads covering that, just a thing or 2 you tried that you think didn't go as planned.

Happy new year guys.

using 8 litres of pink grapefruit juice for my elvis juice attempt out of a 22 litre brew. my el cid used 9 litres of apple juice out of a 22 litre brew and it was super.

perhaps 5 litres next time :hmm:

Don't leave the blowoff tube connected when you cold crash your beer meaning that 2 week old standing water gets sucked in. Had this happen and chucked the batch rather than risk it.

Earlier in the year I started racking to secondary with a blow off connected and did the same thing. Will I ever learn?

Cor I bet that turned your face inside out!

Connecting my new CFC to the house tap with silicone hose, wow does that stuff expand under mains pressure

SWMBO didn't appreciate the new swimming pool kitchen feature, how ungrateful

I regret not being more careful when checking the pitching temperature when I did my golden ale. It never cleared and had a horrible nail varnish aftertaste. It had so much potential- I’ll give it another go for this summer I think.

I did an OSH hen type ale in the summer and didn't plan my water bottles for my bag properly. As it was a summer brew I don't like leaving it before pitching and I pitched too high and as it was CML the yeast took off and was at 26 I couldn't get it down and then it stuck on me and then I got a pellicle after messing about with it, pitched a saison yeast and it became drinkable..

After such a mess that was a result but the beer wasn't my best sadly..

That's made me think.
I'm going to attach a fermentation lock to the inside of the fridge and just connect my blow off tube to it. I've been caught out draining off trub and sucking water out of the bottle.

Brewing in summer - every year I say I'll stop June-Sept, every year I make beer and it ends up horrible and/or infected. Brewed this year 'cos we were having a cool spring and the heatwave arrived the next day. I have limited temp control to warm things up, but not to keep them cool.

Trying to make 5 gallons of booze out of lemon curd. Taking too long to admit it was like drinking washing up liquid and lard.

I feel your pain man.

I'm just about to splash out on 5 brand new fermenting bins to replace the battle-scarred ones which have served me well for donkey's years. It's still 2017 and I know I'm going to regret parting with all that cash.

Sounds like you need to get a Fermentasaurus, mind you it sounds like you've had a few already after the curry's you make:whistle:

What's a fermentasaurus - a homebrewing dinosaur or summat? Talking of curries... I've just received a pack of Trinidad Moruga Scorpions for tonight's effort. So that'll be another regret to add to the list lol.

Add to that one sealing up the lid of an FV, filling up the airlock... and then lifting it up to put it in the brew fridge. Thankfully there was only Star San in there. 1001 ways to empty your airlock into your beer
