I have been playing around with a recipe and I keen to get some feedback on the ingredients before I commit to the brew. I am aiming for a hop-forward Tropical/Pacific style Pale Ale.

I formulated the recipe around a Mosaic/Citra/Simcoe combination, but I'm a bit unclear on ratios that I should be using. Sometimes I notice a musky after-taste/aroma on the tropical ales, which Im keen to avoid.

Target Volume: 23 Litres. Target OG: 1.041. Target FG: 1.006. Target ABV: 4.6%. Colour: 3 SRM. IBUs: 32

2.0kg Pilsner Malt
2.0kg Maris Otter Pale

5g Warrior (US) 60 min

15g Mosaic (US) 10 min
15g Simcoe (US) 10 min
15g Citra (US) 10 min

30g Mosaic (US) Whirlpool
30g Simcoe (US) Whirlpool
30g Citra (US) Whirlpool

10g Mosaic (US) Dry Hop
10g Simcoe (US) Dry Hop
10g Citra (US) Dry Hop

Safale US-05

Comments much appreciated.

I’m not a big fan of using a specific high AA buttering hop, but that’s just personal preference.

Also, your dry hop looks far too low. I’d be using at least 75g of a dry hop, preferably higher, if you want to get much aroma in your beer.

I agree with thr dry ho and would use 20g or 30g of each to give a little more aroma and taste kick but apart from that I would say its sounds good maybe a little torrified for head retention

Thanks for the feedback, I'll increase the dry hop additions to 25g each.

What do you mean by torrified? Too much Pilsner? I've only heard this in reference to wheat.

I have also been thinking 1kg Pilsner, 3 kg MO

Torrified wheat just add 100g to 200g this does help with head retention not as a replacement for any of your malts

Galaxy is big on tropical flavour and aroma it. I think citra has that musty after taste but i like it. Id drop the citra and put some galaxy and cascade in the late hops and dry hops

Here’s another one,250g of hops I think though

Cheers. Out of interest do you know if the suspected citra musty taste comes from the boiling, whirlpool or dry hop stage?
