Do you agree that "society would be better off if people cut the amount of social media use" i think he has a point.

Pub chain JD Wetherspoon has used Twitter to tell its 44,000 followers that it is quitting social media.

The firm's head office and 900 pubs will quit the micro-blogging site, and also Instagram and Facebook, with immediate effect, it said.

The pub chain linked the move to bad publicity surrounding social media including the "trolling" of MPs.

Chairman Tim Martin told the BBC that society would be better off if people cut the amount of social media use.

The firm said its decision had also been influenced by concerns regarding the "misuse of personal data" and "the addictive nature of social media".

I agree but is it too late to stop it? I don't have a fb or twitter account but do have other's to keep in touch with family 'on the cheap' and for employment purposes.

some SM platforms really do encourage narcissistic behavior. why not promote altruistic behavior instead? or would that be an oxymoron??

I agree in general there are up side to it as well but its generally anti social despite its name.

I think for that reason it will continue but a lot businesses etc will now distance themselves from it.

Why would company restrict their own access to potential costumers?

Why be concerned about the addictive nature of social media, and not the easy access to cheap alcohol? Which is far more damaging.

He was more than happy to use social media in his support of brexit. Why the change of heart?

This appears nothing more than a pulling up of the drawbridge to prevent any future negative publicity. As if he expects a storm coming.

As a side note, It'll be interesting to see whether his chain still has CAMRA's support after next weekend AGM.

I imagine because the **** has only just hit the fan and he no longer wants to associate his business with it.

Has the **** hit the fan with all social media platforms? Surely some still remain credible.

A reminder:

social media

noun

websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.

More than Facebook, Twitter and instagram, fall under this definition.

I think people will still use them for what they were originally set up for and big businesses will distance themselves it's just my view and I could be wrong.

I agree to a certain extent having cut most of my social media (still on Insta and strava).
For some it is the only media outlet that they know. It drives economy too much to get rid completely. And when used correctly is a good marketing tool. For example the other day my wife noticed via Facebook that a new restaurant/pub had opened near us. It has a good social media profile and business is doing well.

I suspect that future generations will be much more savey about use of social media and the risks of posting their entire lives on line.
Unfortunately for the millennial generation, it is in many cases too late. They have left an electronic wake that will haunt them and blight their careers for years to come.

Edited due to the curse of tablet typing.

Fortunately my children are fully aware of this, but working in IT they do tend to listen to the old man on these matters. (After all I fix their **** when it's broken :laugh8:)

Call me cynical, but this is solely about controlling information to Wetherspoons customers. One of the main features of social media is the ability for anyone to respond to anothers output without censorship. Where as with printed media, the originator has full control over what responses are printed. So, when Whetherspoons and Tim Martin peddle their political rhetoric on social media, it can be challenged. When they print it in their own literature or media platform it can't, meaning a full 10 pages of Brexit opinion in Wetherspoon "News" can go unchallenged.

"In a Jeremy Vine show debate the Labour MP, Chuka Ummuna, repeated the canard about food price rises. It was obvious that Chuka had swallowed the CBI line and really believed what he was saying, so I took to Twitter, for the first time ever, to try to correct his understandable misinterpretation. In an exchange of tweets, Chuka stuck religiously to his guns, but his followers got the point even so." - Tim Martin in the above publication.

The hypocrisy and proof of his understanding of the power of social media to challenge opinion.

No, social media has not had its day. It's a primary form of communication for the western world. Tim Martin is a troglodyte.

A troglodyte who will make more forward thinking business decisions in the average morning than you will in your whole life.
And judging by the success of his business, the majority of them so far have been correct.

I'm glad we agree he's a troglodyte. But you do realise making business decisions is not a competition? Comparing an old business owner to a data analyst; I'm sure he does make a lot of business decisions!

Err... isn't this forum just another form of social media?

As to facebook, yes I'm on there but only really because I'm in a group that we use for sharing pictures / info etc. Hardly any of my friends, and yes I know them all personally, post anything anymore. Which is just as well, as those who do post absolute ****.

making better business decisions than your competitors is surely the point of competition?

I can't diss a man who has brought Bengali to the uk for £2 a can. A 355ml can too, noe of this 330ml nonsense :laugh8:
