@dan125 submitted a hoppy black beer

Aroma 7/12
My wife got chocolate and coffee and I got citrus. Amazing how two different people focused on different smells.

Appearance 2/3
Balck with a red tinge. The only thing that let it down was that the head disappeared quickly.

Flavour 16/20
My wife's reaction was 'Nice. In a very positive way. It was a strange one on me because on a blind test I would say this wasn't a dark beer at all. Hardly any roastiness flavour at all. I got citrus, pine flavours, possible passion fruit? Only a slight bitterness in the after taste.

Mouthfeel 3/5
Nice going down a bit thin which was noted by both of us.

Overall
A lovely beer that still confuses me. I was expecting some flavour from the darker malts but didn't get any.

Which leaves me with @Hoddy BIPA

Aroma 6/12
A lovely subtle hop aroma. I couldn't pick up any particular hop but it had me going back for another sniff, time after time.

Appearance 3/3
Deep black colour with a good head

Flavour 15/20
Initial flavour was a sweetness, like lactose sweet. Perhaps that was coming from the yeast? Or have I missed placed something. I have a thing for sweet ipas at the moment so it had me going back for more. There was a nice blend of slight hop flavour (citrus and grapefruit) and the malts.

Mouthfeel 4/5
More body to this than dan and smoother

Overall.
Not as hoppy as some bipa' s but the blend of hops and malt was spot on. No over powering roastiness from the malt made it very Moorish.

So in 2nd place is ....
@stigman with a black neipa

Aroma 5/12
Reading the description of the recipe I was expecting a big aroma hit. I didn't get much citrus flavours and instead I got tank herbal aroma. This wasn't a negative but more unexpected for style.

Appearance 3/3
Dark as night with a good head that stayed.

Flavour 10/20
Don't think a dark neipa work a for me. Didn't know what to expect with this one. Not sure the hop/malt balance works, unless there was something else. The warmer it got the more I liked it.

Mouthfeel 4/5
Nice and smooth, as you would expect with a neipa

Overall
A totally new style for me. It went down well but as mentioned expected a hop bomb neipa. Sorry if it's comes across negative. It was a nice beer and my wife, the co judge got more citrus flavour and not that herbal aroma/Flavour that I experienced. Well done and once I get brewing again I will return a bottle to you.
Shame you weren't impressed buddy. I think time was my enemy with this one, this was bottled from the end of a keg then left in fridge for nearly a week before posting, maybe it got oxidized, because early on it was an absolute juicey hop bomb. Think it was my best beer yet. I'll have to brew it again and send you a fresh one.
Thanks for judging

I would love to try it again, and agree perhaps it's a case of time as faded the hops, I know I have suffered with that in the past. It's hard judging these new style comps because there isn't a criteria to follow, I was expecting a big hop hit but didn't get it.

If I’m honest I think the hops have faded on my BIPA. But also (drinking a beer form the keg now) I think something’s gone on from keg, bottle, to you as I think the hops faded more from the keg.

But hey ho, that’s 4th revision of the recipe and I think it’s defo getting close to being real good.

Thanks for the judging [emoji1303]

Soz for slow reply, but thanks Leon. Glad you liked it.
I was amazed at how little roastiness came through from cold steeping - especially as it was standard black malt rather than a de-husked type.
Mine wasn't bottled from the keg - it was bottled direct from the FS at the same time as kegging, but when I had a bottle the other night I thought the hoppiness had died down a bit already, at only 6ish weeks from brewday.
The head retention was dissapointing though considering it was 20% flaked barley - maybe it used up all its foam making/keeping ability in the fermenter when it tried to escape :laugh8: Never seen a krausen like it before!
