I have broken or strained beyond use three kitchen tin-openers when opening LME cans! They just don't seem tough enough to cope with the tins so the last time I was over in France I bought one of these ...

Tin openers nowadays are a pile of ****. Probably the main reason I started all grain. I even struggle to open a tin of peas with them. Probably something to do with health and bloody safety, 'cos it's much safer to hammer a carving knife into the tin with the palm of your hand. :mad:

Says Stevey, who's been known to his mates as "Fingers" since he lost some of them due to his insane method of opening tins! :laugh8:

Seriously, back in 2003 it was reported that ...

"Last year more than 9,000 people injured themselves while removing the sharp lids from corned beef cans, accounting for 13.8 per cent of all emergency "package" admissions."

Is there any wonder that the NHS is in crisis when some people can't even open a corned beef tin! :laugh8: :laugh8:

Hang on they swapped out the lethal key n windup razor edged strip for pull out top n bottoms a few years back didnt they?? btw i stopped eating tinned meats (by choice) some time in the 80's ;) ..
 
Not in Lidl they didn't!

Corned Beef Hash (using "real" corned beef from a tin) is a childhood treat that I still enjoy and the added danger of opening the can makes it a lot more realistic.

If I'm really lucky, I find a can without the little key and my little tin opener comes into it's own! :UKflag:

A quite interesting factoid:
Although preservation of food using tin cans had been practiced since at least 1772 the first can openers were not patented until 1855.

Presumably the carnage started after 1772 then when people had to open the cans with a knife! :laugh8:

Apparently, the "traditional" corned beef tin was being used as far back as 1898. There's no doubt about it, the shape makes it easy to get all of the contents out of the tin; but after at least 120 years surely it's time we used something a bit safer!

BTW I only use the canned version for Corned Beef Hash as I make my own Salt Beef for sandwiches and other dishes. Safer and tastier all round! :thumb:
 
The most stressful tin can I have to deal with is the Northern Rail one to work on a morning (if i turns up). It's so full even when it opens you can't always get inside.
