Maybe a daft question ... but these ere pickling cucumbers I’m growing , how do you know when they need to be picked .
These two are beginning to go from dark green to a light green /yellow . Is this the point a I pick and pickle ?

That's really well done mate. It's hard for people to appreciate how tricky that is to grow.

Defo this summer we have had helps but a good amount of skill and dedication is also required.

Great growing [emoji106]

Joking aside I'm very much learning....I counted nearly 40 cucumbers on the vines tonight..most a foot long! I'm giving loads away...intend to pickle a lot.
Oh..and thanks!

Yeah but you know good soil, drainage and the right care all add to it. And you gotta learn somehow. And there are plenty of failures along the way.

I only now feel like I can grow cucumbers reliably these days. So tricky to get had by spider mite and losing a whole plant. Or no flowers get pollinated.

I put 3 or 4 cucs in...they got to around 5ft high but cover an area easily 8x8 ft with fruits on the path in my tunnel...as for tomatoes...I haven't done such a good job of trimming the shoots out...got most of them..like day of the triffids....

View attachment 14844 been busy picking....eggs I traded..

I missed about 50% of my French beans as they all came ready while we were away on hols. All that hot weather and regular watering by my sprinkler system push them on somewhat.

I managed to rescue quite allot and Blanche and freeze them thankfully before they all went over.

Clint, were you an experienced grower before you started this plot? I’m massively impressed and would love to get into this sort of thing. I’m severely space constrained so I picked up this book recently which has some cool ideas for using containers and raised beds and careful scheduling so you can maximise what can be grown in a small space.

I've just eaten a meal including homegrown French beans and sweetcorn. Deeeeeeelicious, especially the sweetcorn.

Yeah my sweet corn has come ready since we’ve been back and we had the first few cobs a few days ago and they are really good this year. Again all this hot sunny weather has led to a bumper top quality crop.

Ajhutch...I've done a bit over the years but only small scale greenhouse with the usual stuff.. toms, cues and chillies.
I've done a bit of reading up,bought a load of manure and been lucky. I'm not over crazy about lots of digging and weeding as it upsets my wonky back but between us me and the Mrs get it done.
