Well today I have brewed my first batch, it's a Wilkinson pale ale, it's in the kegg and I am excited to taste it in a few weeks time.

If it was only in the fermenter for 5 days, I hope you have a pressure release valve on that barrel as I suspect it might not have fully finished primary fermentation.

Keep releasing some pressure over the next week by loosening the lid if the barrel starts distorting.

I was going to leave it for a week but when it stopped smelling I tested it with a hydrometer and it said to bottle or kegg. It only has a co2 valve on but I have a spare lid, whould it be better to use a pressure valve in the early stages and then swap the lid for a co2 valve when its half used and it needs pressurising?
 
I usually leave my kits in the fermenter for a minimum of 2 weeks and only bottle or keg after 3 hydrometer readings the same over 3 days.
There is a risk that your brew may not have finished fermenting so keep an eye on the keg to make sure that there is not too much pressure building up. If the keg starts bulging, I would loosen the lid to let the pressure out.
Your brew may have finished fermenting in 5 days in the warmer weather but keep watching it just in case.
 
Also I know some hydrometers have marks on the scale to 'show when it is ready to bottle' but i usually ignore that. I go off the reading. For a kit and using kit yeast, I would usually bottle if I get 3 readings the same of 1.014 or lower.

I will check it tomorrow and if it's looking like it's buldging I will release it. Thanks for the heads up
 
Well it's nearly gone lol
It tasted great, that good i have done a Geordies export now it's nearly time to put it in the keg. I am still trying to get the Rotokeg in action but still no sealed lid
