I though it would be best to start a thread on this new project so to call it.

So here we go, being a tight git still and to tight to buy even a cheap fruit press for £38 i have rumaged around the garden and shed and found this lot.

8 foot length 50mm x 50mm x 3mm SHS
length of steel pipe 720mm x 320mm x 8mm
Scissor jack
A 10l ally stew pot that i used to sterilise home brew bit n bobs
and some 18mm plywood

I always knew the large steel tube would come in, it was to be for a stove but now it will be a fruit press.

I have just back off my jollys i have just picked about 50kg of apples off my trees and this wekeend i am goi gto collect an unkown amount of pears. all desert/eating types. so loads of apples and pears to get through. Subject to friends helping out in exchange for a few bottles i may get a few more KG yet.

I will be getting a bigger maybe 15l SS stew pot it if works so the ally one is a practice pot in the above pic.

Ooo looking forward to this as never done real home brew before just TC and kits.

Watch this space :):)

Small update as had a lot on today

I found a baking tray for the drip tray and a perfic fit. this will be sat on 18mm ply base. the old ally inner stew pot is 2cm smaller in diam, so a nice fit and i have found a few 16l that will fit alos and will get one soon.

sods law i sold my sandblaster now

I was going to go all hog at it and make a GRP drip/run off tray and make it from moulding it from this cake tin, but this will do for a practice.

I will crack on more this weekend with it. I have an whole fruit juicer before i press it.

So watch this space :)

WOW! Brilliant idea!

That's the reason I save everything ... athumb..

... why SWMBO is forever moaning about the state of my shed which in turn ... asad1

... is why I threw away the old Smoker that would have taken the place of your old pipe. aheadbutt

The only good thing about it is that I don't own any apple trees and don't like cider! :laugh8:

Keep the photographs coming though! athumb..

what would us chaps be with no shed for collecting esssential items. I shudder to think but there is no changing me on that score. T needs permission before she dares go in there lol..

Nice work that man. clapa

I was going to ask how you are going to scrat the apples and pears before pressing... 50kg in a juicer? ashock1

Please tell me I've misunderstood... :laugh8:

I wasnt expecting so many apples never mind the pears i need collect this weekend. I am going to see how the juicer goes, i reckon it mite not be so painful with a few ciders and and a chair with Queen blasting out in the shed lol.

I am just being a tight git on buying a scratter lol

These are my apples i collected, i have some more that folk have donated.

All of two trees and lost near that amount again in windfall that are no good now, should of collected them sooner i guess.

Well here we have it, the finished fruit press. I cant do anything normal so i made it Pneumatic with the help f my compressor and a new windy gun, my old one has rusted to one solid block due not being looked after so a good excuse to get a new one.

The Jack is from a Peugeot or Citroen van, these give 2.4T and a much higher lift, or in this case drop to the bottom of the pot.

I say it is finished as i want anew press pot and will get one before this weekend i hope so i cant start pressing. Much the same but a Stainless steel one.
The drip tray or what ever you call it is made from GRP and sits in 18mm ply.

So this weekend will see if it works or not. cant see why not.

this is great work, Wayne - but my strong advice is to turn your creative engineering talent to scratting - as that is way more effort than pressing and as such it is where the biggest time and financial gains are to be made...... really well scratted apples (aim for a sort of porridge) yield much more juice also.

That is my next project. I will be using a juicer for now for the first load.

On Olde Worlde Maps they had sections that said "Here there be dragons!" ...

... above the average juicer there should be a sign that says "Here there be much work and many tears!" ...

... especially after seeing the amount of apples you have to scrat! Enjoy!
