I've just started a mash and the temp was bang on 70c, I turned off the power to the tun, left my thermometer on while adding the grain. As I came to the end the temp shot up over 80c, I've never seen a rise like this before.
The only thing different about this brew is that I've added 500g flaked barley, could this have some reaction to cause the heat to rise??? I'm utter befuddled!!!!!

Update: I'm adding cold water every 5 mins as the temp is rising...This is soooooo bizzare!!

I don't believe the temperatures reported are representative of the temperatures in the actual mash. If your strike water was in the right place (it would give off a lot of water vapour if it were too high) then the addition of the grain at todays ambient temps gets you where you need to be.

On further investigation it looks like my Thermopro Thermometer has blown a gasket. Only 2 months old, done 3 brews and half a dozen smoked briskets and it's knackered already!! Is it just me, but it appears that I waste an inordinate amount of time repairing or returning junk to fleabay, or A N Other online junk shop. Anyhow, I think I've rescued my brew as it's now sitting in the FV after cooling over night. Aimed for 19l and a OG of 1.056, ended up with 18l with OG of 1.05.5...phew.

Thermopens, I've not come across that one. Cheers I'll look into them.
Yes, beer is fine, but I thought my last brisket from the smoker could have been cooked a little longer.

The thermopens are bullet proof and come with a calibration cert.

Glad no beer was wasted!

I bought a couple of cheap digital thermometers and ended up forking out for a thermapen in the end and Hang the Expense.

Still have a glass one as back up.

Plus One Slid always have a old style glass one tucked away just for cases like this
