Here in Shetland where I live the sun will soon be up for less than six hours a day in Yuletime, but come simmer dim in the third week of June the sun will be up for nearly nineteen hours a day. That means shortly the sun will rise at about 9.10am and go down at about 2.45pm. In June it will rise at about 3.00am and drop just before 11.00pm.

What daylight hours do you get in both the winter and the summer?

Dec 21: sunrise 0820, sunset 1547.
June 21: sunrise 0436, sunset 2138.

Being a creature of the night, I love the shorter days - sunshine seriously freaks me out. Seems like five minutes ago since high summer and its attendant horrors, but in less than three weeks the days will start to lengthen. It's just too horrible to contemplate. Imagine living north of the Arctic Circle!

Bit of a difference in the times, Gunge. Your winter daylight is an hour and a half longer - big difference, and a bit easier to live with, for me anyway. Simmer dim is very obviously the other way round, we don't go to sleep up here then 'cause the night sky is never really seen. I can watch the birds fly 24 hours a day then:cool:

I was working west of Shetland this time last year, mostly nightshift so never see the sun anyway, I shifted onto days before going home and I was amazed at the lack of light. Didn't get light til 10am then it suddenly went dark at 3pm. Blink and you missed it, daylight to darkness, it was weird.

I'm with you Gunge, but I'm a red head so the sun has it out for me. :-)
