hi all this Saturday i'am going to try my first ever all grain brew as with all things I thought I would jump in feet first.
I bought a son of punkie all grain kit but have a few questions about the recipe
1 - the mash says 90 mins do you think this includes mash out or is this step not needed
2 -how long would you leave the 0 min hop addition in before you start cooling
3- there is a dry hop addition at 5 days does this mean 5 days into fermentation or 5 days before its meant to finish or 5 days after if after should you rack it before the hops
really looking forward to trying this but just worried about theses bits
many thanks brew gods.

This pack contains enough ingredients to brew two batches of 19 litres.

The Maris Otter is weighed out in two 5kg bags ready to be added to the mash tun/grain bag. Hops are supplied in our usual 100g packs and will need weighing out.

Boil Size: 26.84 l
Post Boil Volume: 21.84 l
Batch Size : 19.00 l
Mash liquor Volume 12.5l
Mash Temp 66c 90 mins Estimated OG: 1.059
SG Estimated Color: 10.0
EBCEstimated IBU: 43.2 IBUs
Brewhouse Efficiency: 75.00 %
Boil Time: 60 Minutes

Ingredients: 5.00 kg Pale Malt
50.00 g Bravo [14.00 %] – Boil 12.0 min
18.00 g Chinook PELLETS [14.10 %] – Boil 5.0 min
16.00 g Ahtanum [5.30 %] – Boil 5.0 min
16.00 g Cascade [5.50 %] – Boil 5.0 min
16.00 g Ahtanum [5.30 %] – Boil 0.0 min
16.00 g Cascade [5.50 %] – Boil 0.0 min
16.00 g Chinook PELLETS [14.10 %] – Boil 0.0 min
Dry Hop 5.0 Days 16.00 g Cascade [5.50 %] –
Dry Hop 5.0 Days 16.00 g Chinook PELLETS [14.20 %] –

This kit would suit NBS West Coast yeast or Mangrove Jacks M44 (not included)

Here's MY interpretation (there may be others):
  1. The Mash time of 90 minutes starts when the grain is fully stirred into the Strike Water and ends when the Sparge Water (or Mash Out) is started.
  2. The hops are added to the wort AFTER it has started to boil and in this case I think the times indicate the amount of time that the hops are to be boiled in the wort. If I am correct then:
    1. Add the 12.0 minute hops 48 minutes after the wort has started to boil.
    2. Add the 5.0 minute hops after 55 minutes after the wort has started to boil.
    3. Add the 0.0 minutes hops at Flameout.
  3. Dry hop after 5 days of fermentation.
Hope this helps.

If recipies say Dry Hop 5 days, it means to dry hop for 5 days. Personally i'd let it ferment for 2 weeks, then add the hops and leave for 5 days, then package. If the hops go in during fermentation, you lose flavour and aroma and if they're left in too long can result in grassy flavours.

Did you end up getting this done?
It's a Malt Miller AG kit isn't it? I've done it a few times and it's a great way to get going with AG brewing. With a lot of the Malt Miller recipes you can download the recipe to the Grainfather App either directly from the MM site or via Grainfather site. You don't need a Grainfather to use the app although you may need to register on the site. It gives you extra details on the app (like mash out details for example).

Just finished bottling not sure the dry hopping went as well as I hoped but first time brewing all grain.how do you download the recipe from the mm site to the grain father app?

I brewed this recently, tasted amazing when I took a sample and that was before dry hopping - bottling it today, can't wait for it to be ready! :beer1:
Just finished bottling seemed to go ok find out in two weeks fingers crossed. .

Good luck! athumb..

Mine is taking a while to clear but that's probably my fault as I forgot the Irish moss in the boil, and used Us-05 yeast which took forever to drop last time I used it.

Had one last night anyway and it does taste good and pretty close to the real thing :beer1:

Good stuff - I'm sure it will be great. I bought a friend this kit for Christmas as his first brew and it's been two weeks in the bottles tomorrow - we're all excited!

Have you downloaded the file from MaltMiller ok? After that you need to register on the Grainfather site https://brew.grainfather.com and then import it into 'my recipes'. It should then appear in the app after a few mins.

Well done mate, looks like a real success.

Tasted mine (well, his) last night. Was really good. Just the right bitterness and then quite a fruity hoppiness. I've still got another one of these to brew which I intend to add some extra mosaic to.
