Hello

Just wondering if anybody has brewed this kit recently and if so, when did you add the hops and how did it taste once done, i like my beer quite hoppy.

Leave it until it has almost finished fermenting or later, up to you. Best on a nearly steady SG. Add hops. Leave at fermenting temperature for 4/5 days. Move to a cold place as a crash cool for 2 days to help clear and drop the remainder of the hops. Package. More here

And I suggest you use all the hops supplied if you haven't done this kit before. At least then you will have a good idea of what it is supposed to taste like, so you can modify it if you do it again. Your idea of what is OK might not be the same as mine or the next man etc etc. See Bigcol's tag 10 Homebrewers, 11 opinions!

I added the hops three days before the end of fermentation which I think it recommends in the instructions. It's also a good hoppy beer so you should like it.

I dont have anywhere cool to place it other than outside, would that be too cold? would it then be a problem for bottle conditioning?
 
If the outside temperature is warm enough not to freeze you beer into a block, I'd say go for it. Bottle it cold and then bring the bottles into the warm to condition. I'd be more worried about things getting into my beer if I left it outside- cats, rats, people on the way home from the pub!

I talked about cold crashin with the dude at my local brew store yesterday, he said its fine unless it gets really cold. He did mention to put a bin liner over fermenter when brewing hoppy beers as the light can have a negative affect?

Did you ask him why he was telling you that?
He might be right, he might be wrong.
We should all be receptive to new advice, but unfortunately there's a lot of BS and myths perpetuated by homebrewers (including 'the bloke in the HBS') often because people have just heard something as part of a chinese whispers flow of information and so it's always good to know the basis of any alternatives to what is often considered normal practice.
Then you can make an informed decision about how it affects you.

Yeah, ive read conflicting stuff. Im a newbie so just have to try and read in between it all and learn by mistakes. The homebrew shop guy also told me to beware of forums LOL.

Perhaps its because folk come back and query his advice after they have asked about it on their forum wink...
I'm sure most HBS owners are homebrewers with some level of expertise, and will in the main know what they are talking about, but sometimes they seem to get things wrong if what I occasionally read on here is true. And if they have got someone in to look after the shop, who has no real knowledge of homebrewing, who knows what they are going to tell you.
 
Light skunks hoppy beer. Good advice imo.
My understanding is its not any light, it's sunlight or more specifically UV, and possibly the blue part of the spectrum. Though I might be wrong on that, and will be interested to learn if I am wrong. But if I'm right and you keep your FV next to a south facing window, or in a room with a cool white fluorescent light on all the time and that light can permeate the wall of the FV, as in glass, thats relevant advice, cos apparently hoppy beers are more susceptible to skunking. Otherwise it matters not for an FV.
What about the crash cool bit?
