Hi folks,

I'm just getting back into brewing after a break of about 20 years. I've only done extract kits up to now but am keen to do some small batch (10 or 11.5L) biab AG. I would like to get a stout under way and in bottles with a view to allowing it to condition. So I'm looking for some simple stout recipes. I like all stouts including Imperials.

So over to you!

Hi Bezza, thanks for that - looks nice.

Any other contributions, maybe something a bit more full bodied to lay down for Christmas!

Have you thought about a stout kit? For example I make up the Coopers stout kits and with additions they are about on par with anything in a pub and AG. For me they are one of the best kits I have done. And they can be drunk young. Then as for your stronger Imperial type you could do an AG and lay it down for a few months.

Hi Terrym,

Thanks for that. I've got a 23L pale ale kit on the go at the moment to keep me in beer for a while. So the idea was to do some smaller batches of AG to experiment a bit, and the idea was to start with a stout that I can lay down, so an Imperial would be ideal.

Cheers

By full bodied, I assume you mean more alcoholic? Oatmeal will add body to a beer, even if it is lower in the alcohol.

What sort of ABV might you be looking for?

I would think for something to lay down a minimum of 6% going up to 8% maybe?

He certainly did. It was his Simple AG post that has got me going on this thread. What happened to him?

Alive and well, last I knew. I don't think he fully realised then or even now, the impact the Simple AG thread would have on so many of us. Got me started on the AG trail, for sure.
Good bloke, with much going on, last time I heard. So much so, that at that time, he sadly had to decline on the suggestion he post here regularly again.

I've seen this Riptide Imperial Stout on Brew Dog's site that looks straightforward.

I have a couple of questions though. Firstly I put it into Brewtarget and the ABV comes up at 9.1 as opposed to 8.0. Secondly they recommend

"adding the chocolate malt at the start of the run off to ensure you extract the flavour and colour without imparting too much of the astringency of the malt into your wort."

What does this mean? I'm planning to do a BIAB batch of 10L.

Cheers
