They are discussing this on 5 live saying it would be better to start the day later as the poor souls are tired as you can imagine a few listeners have called in saying they need a good kick up the butt.

I used to do a paper round before school in all weather's and after school we played out until it was dark when we went to bed we went to sleep not to play on our consoles or mess about on Facebook (or any of the spinoffs ) until the early hours and here is where I believe the problem lies if they went to sleep they wouldn't be so tired.

They bloody well ought to start at 6am and finish at 6pm. And give them 4 weeks holiday a year like everyone else. Well that's the teachers sorted at least.

Hi!
Speaking as a retired teacher, I would suggest that the little f***ers get hauled out of bed and booted all the way to school.
@Gunge - just a reminder that teachers don't get paid for the 12 weeks holiday tha they are compelled to take each year.

I know... was just my abrasive sense of humour. But ye, pupils have it waaay too easy. When I worra lad etc etc.

Hi!
Found this online:
On average, an English primary teacher's starting salary is around £19,600. After ten years this reaches around £28,700.
Supply teachers on the same pay scale earn more per day than a full-time teacher because they don't work in the holidays. A full-time teacher's salary is paid in 12 equal monthly instalments over the year, but they only get paid for the days they work.

The older I've gotten the less I seem to need to sleep. My girlfriend is 8 years younger than me and I can see in her similar sleeping habits to what I used to have. I think back to when I was a teenager and I was pretty much useless at getting out of bed and found it very easy to linger in bed until lunch time on the weekend. I do believe that when you are younger you need more sleep and when you are a child you must be knackard from ... growing or something.

From a practical point of view I'm sure it'd take some strain off the roads. Don't really care otherwise what hours school keeps, like a lot of things it isn't really that suited to purpose and I'm sure that the 'work' could be done in a few hours a day, but you've got to institutionalise them somehow and nobody is staying off work to hang around with their kids 5 days a week.

Bet the phone in went along these lines;

Caller 1:

'I think they should scrap school and send them down salt mines to do a hard 18 hours graft. They should also be forced to have a short back and sides and the mine oversears should impose discipline via hard beatings'

Caller 2:

'I think it's hard being a kid in today's online world and school should only last for two hours a day where they should have time to rest and contemplate and play with fluffy bunnies. They should also have the vote'

Repeat ad nauseium.

God, I hate phone in programs.

In my teens, I suffered badly from being unable to wake up and get out of bed in the morning.

When I was thirteen, my Mum took on a Boarding House and needed me to help out with the breakfasts after I had finished my paper-round and before going to school. Obviously, I didn't own an alarm clock so Mum used to have to trudge up three flights of stairs to wake me up for my paper-round.

It only took one morning for my Mum to cure me of my desire to stay in bed. This was achieved by the simple process of knocking the **** out of me with Dad's pit-belt (buckle end first) after I had twice said "In a minute." and then fallen back to sleep.

The memory that lingers even to this day, was Mum's 'shouted' whisper of "Be quiet, you'll wake the guests!" when I started screaming with the pain!

Happy Days!

I'm a retired teacher, too. Long hours, but at least you can knock off at four, get a brew on and then spend the next six hours marking effing books, or mock exams or some such nonsense, but at least you've got a brew on so the evening isn't wasted.
That's the evenings between pointless meetings and parents' evenings of course.

A teacher's life can't be all that bad... at our school, two of 'em got the sack when pupils caught them going at it like the clappers in the gym during lunch. Another two got the peddler when they were caught going at it hammer and tongs in the chemistry lab. Dunno if that was during lunch tho'.

I wondered if this would be getting discussed here after I saw it on the news at breakfast. I was interested in seeing it discussed as they did studied a few years back and kids, especially teenagers, don't function properly in the morning. It's not (always) laziness that keeps them in bed but a part of their development. One school did trial a 10 am start I think and it did help grades.

Here are some links.

Would probably quite a challenge for working parents.

Quite so. Rehearsing biology practicals in the chemistry lab! There's a place for everything. I would have thought the gym was appropriate for creative gymnastics, though.
Now how can I use this to inspire a new beer?

Teacher here, vocational, 16-20 yr olds. Later starts mean later endings, and that conflicts with their evening jobs.
Just as with adults, a lot of youngsters are at their best before 12 o'clock. It's not the rhythm that's causing a problem, it's the lack of sleep. There is not much sleep discipline enforced.

Mine used to get a tap on the head with a toffee hammer to induce instant sleep, and a goodly waft of smelling salts under the hooter to wake him up. Teenagers are basically louts and should be treated as such until they see the error of their ways. Worked on me, too. And why does his bedroom smell like a brothel for polecats which has been gatecrashed by a load of horny skunks who've just finished a shift sorting trash at the municipal dump during a heatwave?

Maybe a pair of your socks ended up in his room? ;)

We used to have to get up out of the shoebox at twelve o'clock at night, and LICK the road clean with our tongues. We had half a handful of freezing cold gravel, worked twenty-four hours a day at the mill for fourpence every six years, and when we got home, our Dad would slice us in two with a bread knife.
