Yeah I seen a programme about some place in Europe that was a medieval town until the Germans bombed it flat. It was all rebuilt to how it used to look. So it's a genuine fake now.

Yes understood Clint, one has only got to visit the Cloth Hall in Ypres - 'The best ventilated place in town' - according to 'The Wipers Times' to see how well reconstruction can be done' But it's sad to see such an iconic & ancient building devastated.

A painter's thinners-soaked rag discarded in a heap is often the cause of these fires.

It's terrible news, I hope everyone is alright.

My mate wasn't sure who could have started the fire; or why; but did say he had a hunch...

Terrible. I bet the French rebuild it pretty quick though, seeing as it's a national icon

Awful to see it burning but they managed to save the main stone structure and it looks like funds will not be a problem.

Hundreds of millions of euros have been pledged to help rebuild Notre-Dame after a devastating fire partially destroyed the French cathedral.

The fire, declared fully extinguished some 15 hours after it began, ravaged the 850-year-old building's roof and caused its spire to collapse.

But firefighters who worked through the night managed to save the Paris landmark's main stone structure, including its two towers.

The cause of the fire is not yet clear.

The battle to halt the devastating blaze at Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris evoked memories of the fire that took hold in York Minster 35 years ago.

Millions of euros have been pledged to help rebuild Notre-Dame after Monday's fire destroyed much of the 850-year-old Gothic building.

In the early hours of 9 July 1984, lightning set fire to York Minster's south transept causing £2.25m damage.

Experts at York said restoring Notre-Dame was "quite achievable".

John David, a master mason at York Minster, said Notre-Dame could be rebuilt using traditional crafts.

Mr David, who was working at the Minster in 1984 and dealt with the reconstruction after that fire, said work to repair the building may take time, but it would be done properly.

He said the two churches faced the same dilemma on reconstruction.

Mr David said: "At York Minster there were questions about whether we put an oak roof back on top or a steel roof or even a concrete roof.

"Some people think we can't do this sort of thing any more in traditional materials - we can, and so I think the roof will be reconstructed and put back on.

"I don't think it will take 10 years - it might take two years to decide what to do, but it's quite achievable."

Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu tweeted to say he was offering prayers after the fire at Notre-Dame.

Can we keep this on topic (i.e. a fire in a very old and famous building) i don't want this to turn into an argument about religion and have already removed two such posts.

From the photo's it looks to have scaffolding all around it so I presume some company was working on it during the daytime...... I hope they are insured.

It only needs a rag soaked in linseed oil and it would self ignite. Maybe the modern workforce didn't know that.

Still - will keep all those restorers in a job for years.

They are showing the firefighters inside now it doesn't look any worse than the pics of the inside of the Minster I posted above a lot of the windows and paintings etc have survived.
