But they don't taste better, they taste different! I suppose it's depends on whether you're a "sipper" or a "glugger". I didn't realise this was so important until I moved to France. There are plenty of excellent Belgian beers and Bières de Garde on the supermarket shelves (as well as plenty of 'orrible stuff), but if you don't feel you've had a proper pint until you've had six, then they're ultimately unsatisfying. I found myself drinking Heinneken (marginally not quite as awful as the Brit brew, but even so!) and Fischer, both too sweet, but drinkable, until I got my brewery unpacked and sourced the ingredients. At least I was able to keep the empties for bottling.
I've always thought my quest as a brewer was to brew the weakest beer with the best body, flavour and everything else that goes into making an excellent pint, so that I could drink more of it than otherwise before falling over. This sentiment gives me hope that I drink for the love of the beer and not just for the alcohol.
(Who am I kidding?)
+1 for that... Anyone who says you "can't brew flavoursome beer at less than 6%"(mainly Americans) have never tried .....(add name of your favourite session ale here..) and are talking b*llox... My preference, if I'm out, is less than 4%, but I tend to hit about 5% with my own.

Of course you can get some great session strength beers, but will a 4% stout ever be as flavourful as a 16% stout? acheers.

I met a guy I know the other day who had moved to the US for 5 years and he said out there there's a common theory that stronger means better pretty much regardless.

Just in case it wasn't obvious from the OP, this thread was very much tongue in cheek.

While many of my all-time favourite beers are relatively high in ABV I can and do appreciate beers of all strengths and styles and certainly don't subscribe to the notion that stronger = better.

Lighter, cleaner, more subtle styles certainly have their place, and I'm actually a huge fan of German lagers for that reason. But I also love big, bold flavours which in general seem to come with bigger beers.

Seasonal thing innit? I'm planning to brew a 5% British golden ale in the next few days so I can enjoy swigging a refreshing beer in the hot weather we're going to get soon :tinhat:

Sipping and savouring an 8%+er is better in the colder weather I reckon

Could be worse, you could pi88 on Mrs Clint.

That brought back memories!

Long ago (back in the 1960's) a neighbour thought "home-brewed beer" was the same as "free-beer" and took to visiting us of an evening to neck back a load of my home-brew before staggering home.

So, after a month of this (and the dropping of numerous hints) I decided to brew a special high ABV just for him; and it worked better than I expected.

I asked him why he had stopped dropping by and discovered that his wife had banned him from visiting us! This was after she had caught him relieving himself over the clothes in the airing cupboard, instead of using the toilet which was one door further along the landing!

Happy Days! athumb..

Well, thankfully, I've never peed on my wife - I think that might have caused serious and permanent issues!
However, I'm ashamed to admit that I did start to relieve myself in the night on my infant daughter when in her cot, back in the 1980s, before gradually realising that something was amiss....... In my defence, I wasn't in my own house, and so I was rather disorientated (OK, not much of a defence, I must admit!).
Anyway, I maintain that I was only getting my own back for her crapping on me in the bath a couple of months previously.
Perhaps its experiences like this that have turned me away from strong beers....
