Those that have to be offended on others behalf are all over social media Brand bashing, can we no longer make a joke (that was so obvious not mean to be taken seriously ) without these keyboard warriors flooding the Internet with their complaints.

The BBC has defended Jo Brand against claims she incited violence through comments made during a radio show.

The comedian, a guest on BBC Radio 4's Heresy on Tuesday, joked about throwing battery acid at "unpleasant characters" rather than milkshakes.

Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage, who was hit by a milkshake last month, said "the police need to act".

The BBC said the jokes made on Heresy are "deliberately provocative as the title implies".

It added they are "not intended to be taken seriously."

Brand, speaking after Mr Farage and a number of far-right European election candidates were covered in milkshakes during campaign walkabouts in May, said "Why bother with a milkshake when you could get some battery acid?"

The comic then went on to immediately make clear she was joking and criticised the milkshake stunts.

"That's just me. I'm not going to do it," she said. "It's purely a fantasy, but I think milkshakes are pathetic, I honestly do, sorry."

Her follow-up comments were edited out of widely-shared clips on social media.

Mr Farage said the comments amounted to "an incitement to violence".

At the end of show, host Victoria Coren Mitchell said she hoped Brand's remarks had not caused offence, but reiterated that the long-running series had been set up to "test the boundaries of what it's OK to say and not say".

She later responded to Mr Farage on Twitter, accusing him of double standards, as an outspoken advocate of free speech and critic of political correctness.

She wrote: "Nigel! I'm genuinely disappointed; we don't agree on everything, but I would totally have had you down as a free speech man. Especially when it comes to jokes."

I do like a good joke, but I can't see a funny side to that comment, Jo Brand, as an ex nurse I believe, should know there are people out there who society would regard as 'ill at ease' could pick up on such a comment and carry out such an act of throwing battery acid over some unsuspecting politician.
I made a jocular remark on this forum about David Heath being able to put a glass eye to sleep during the narratives of his brewing videos and the post got wiped.

All "seriousness" aside...what DO the righteous do to have a laugh, take the **** etc?
It must be something like..."hey,this morning I went to the shops and forgot my money carrying receptacle.."
This would be met with rapturous applause as it is quite a silly, harmless thing to have forgotten AND it was described in a non gender way.
Now..where is that Chubby Brown dvd...can't find it..like hen's teeth!!!

Interesting how often a suggestion to harm or maim someone, is explained as a joke.

Not my kind of joke.

Something like the squirrel in the captain's pants is way funnier.

Poor squirrel...nearly as bad as pulling a rabbit out of an upturned hat..by its ears.
(that is a joke)
I would wish neither grey or red squirrels to be stuffed down someone's trousers or rabbits into and out of hats..even wild ones. Rabbits that is...not hats.

Well I heard the program and didn't think it was such a bad joke in context. There might well be people who would do the suggested act but they're more interested in nicking your moped and I very much doubt they listen to radio 4 very often.

My experience with rabbits is that they are excellent in not giving a single ****, and can appreciate a good hat, if big enough to turn around in and have a kip.*

I can't speak for squirrels though, whatever colour.

*no hats were harmed in these observations, just cardboard boxes with a size resemblant.

Farage would have jumped on what Brand said, as he's as he's a massive attention seeker and thrives on controversey. He would have know the reaction his 'complaint' would have got in the media whether he was really insulted buy it or not.

It would be surprising where the ill at ease got there information.

Attention seeker or not, insulted or not, there are those who will, or could in their own minds take ac tion, you only have to look at the murder of John Lennon, attempted murder of Reagan the shootings in New Zealand, doesn't take much to take a deranged mind to think they are doing the world a favour.

Exactly which is why I can fully understand Nigel Farages concerns. Battery Acid throwing made news quite often last year, at least milkshakes are harmless.

Q: What did the Grape say when it was stepped on?
A: Nothing, it just gave out a little Whine!

Q: what's brown and sticky?
A: A Stick.

When you make a joke about someone or a group of people it's at their expense. When you're at the 'cutting' edge of comedy you can often draw blood. Look at some of the stuff Frankie Boyle has said, Cruel and Obscene rather than funny.

So comics shouldn't make risque jokes just in case people get murdered?

I wonder if Dave would have seen it as a jocular comment.

There is a huge difference between a member here insulting the way another members speaks which is by the way against the forum rules and a well known comedien making a joke which was so obviously a joke only those that have made a hobby on being offended on other people's behalf would have see it in any other way.

A friend at work told me the other day that he had a day at the races a week or so ago. At one point an oddly dressed stranger approached him and asked would he like the winner of the next race?
After a moment's thought, he replied "No....I've only got a small garden".

Thought that was quite amusing.

******* hilarious. That's not sarcasm. The people who act on such comments, joke or not are simply morons.

We had a politician and at 1 time his oponents' supporters threw a shitpie into his face.
Made from genuine human excrement, his political opponents found it very 'playful'. Not my kind of funny.

His political career ended shot several times through the head, and everyone mourned.

First of all I don't believe David Heath was a member here when I made the comment, I merely suggested that he should get someone to do the voice over for his videos, (which are very informative) as his voice could send a glass eye to sleep. Not an insult, just some constructive criticism, I very much doubt that it would rouse some member of the fringe dwellers to take out a acid attack to anyone speaking in a monotone drone.
Making suggestions of throwing acid and not a milkshake should not be dismissed as a joke there are those who would take it literally.

I think if you're gonna throw acid over someone there is something severely wrong with you, and you don't just do something like that because a comedian said a joke about it. An example used a lot is after Columbine, people blamed video games, heavy metal etc but those guys were just insane and there was no one thing which triggered their rampage. Bringing this back to Jo Brand, looking at a cross section of her fans, I'm not sure they are radicalised either way to pick up battery acid.
