Double brew day today: 1st was a Vacant Gesture all grain kit and a Timothy Taylor Landlord all grain kit, both bought from WHS. It seems to make it a quicker brew day if you don't have to weigh anything.
 
Would love to swap a bottle if it comes out well. Save the trub, I have been reusing the yeast for over a year. Next Lager I will be trying the CML hells out. Looks like it attenuates well.
How did the CML hells yeast turn out? Thinking of trying as my WLP830 has come to the end of it's life and a cheap dry yeast for a German type Pils would be ideal!
 
Two on the brew today:
1-Still on the quest for the perfect Best Bitter, recipes are becoming more and more bizarre- modified APA malt profile bittered with Pilgrim and masses of late Endeavour. High hopes for a nice beer.
2- An almost SMASH with Red-X and Mandarina Bavaria. Almost because a bit of carapils added and Magnum used for bittering. This is the Christmas beer.

The Red-X "SMASH" sounds really interesting. Would be interested in the specifics of the recipe if you don't mind? Are you thinking a relatively neutral yeast or other ideas?

You're welcome, but bear in mind this is just coming to the boil, let alone tried and tested:
Target OG 1050, BU 45ish, 20 litre batch.

95% Bestmalz Red-X
5% Weyermann Carapils
Mash at 65C
FWH Magnum to 40 BU (the rest can come from the rest)
60+15 minutes boil
Protafloc -15 mins
20g Mandarina Bavaria -10 mins
20g Mandarina Bavaria -5 mins
30g Mandarina Bavaria 15 minutes steep when wort is <80C

30g Mandarina Bavaria dry hops no more than 3 days.
(note 100g total of Mandarina Bavaria)#

I was agonising over whether to use MJ M42 yeast or Saflager W 34-70

As everything else is German, I think I'll go with the Weihenstephaner and ferment around 18 C, ie ale temperature.

There we are, good luck if you try it, and good luck to me to as it's a firsty.

Excellent thanks for this. Good luck with it and let us know how it turns out. I like the idea of the mandarina bavaria hops with the red malt. I'm sure it will make a good Christmas beer!

In truth, I've never used Mandarina Bavaria and wanted to do a test brew to get a feel for it. I've knocked this down to a 12 litre stove-top batch.
 
Nothing today but we got home from 2 weeks away and I made a 10l American Stout extract brew with lots of steeped grain before we left. The OG was 1072 and today it's 1020 which seems high. I put the recipe into Brewers Friend and adjusted the eff% to get 1072 and it calculated a FG of 1018 so maybe I'm ok but 1020 seems high. Advice please.
 
Got a batch of single hop (EKG) bitter on tonight.

All was going well until I mashed in then went looking for the robobrew top screen, yup it was at the bottom of the mash, oops! :laugh8:

Also got a blocked pump again so may try bagging the hops or improvising some sort of filter next time.
 
Just started the mash on a ruthless rye IPA
5kg Minch malt
1 kg rye malt
360 crystal 40
100g acid malt
60g chocolate.

Magnum to bitter
Chinook plus magnum At flameout
Dry hop with citra Chinook and magnum
 
In process of brewing Kolsch today
20L batch
Grain
Pilsner 4.120kg
Carapils 0.28kg
Wheat 0.14kg

Hops
Hallertau Blanc 13 @60 min
Tetnang 17 @10min
Huell Melon 12 @10min

Fermentis K-97 will be used.
2+2+4 (at least) method. Hope to bring it to staff xmas party :)
 
Just finished a double brew day, it's the first time I've done one and 7 hours for the two batches seems pretty good to me.

First was the witbier from the GH bible but using Mandarina hops and orange zest to replace the Curaçao orange from the recipe. Then I used a batch of second runnings from the mash and some speciality grains cold steeped overnight to make a low alcohol pale ale with magnum and mosaic. Everything went to plan and I have high hopes for these two. I will post a write up of the low alcohol method I used when I have a chance.
