Hi Guys,
I am very new to brewing. just trying to ferment a 1 L of malt food drink with extra added sugar with bakers instant yeast. been just 12 hours the stuff is already bubbling and tastes of alcohol. I guess the malt extract and added vitamins making the yeast happy. my question is the energy drink powder has ingredients :
Malt extract, skimmed milk powder, palm oil, sweet whey powder, maltodextrin, calcium carbonate, iodized salt, magnesium phosphate, sodium carbonate, vitamins, soy lecithin, ferric pyrophosphate

can any of these turn into some sort of nasty poison during fermentation to kill me?

I don't think there's anything that'll do you any harm, but it's not going to taste very nice, I should imagine. Correct me if I'm wrong.

yes, it does taste like Satan's ball sweat but hey it is all there for me too catch a buzz. still better than my previous worse tomato paste sugar wash sick...

Bakers yeast is called that for a reason. ;)
It was isolated by Mr P. Baker of Penge in 1874. The other stuff was discovered in Pontefract some years later by the celebrated explorer the Rev. Arnold Brewer and has been used in their well-known cakes ever since. God bless him.

I am in a situation where hooch from food drinks + bakers yeast are the only viable option and it is certainly not prison or pizza express.
just experimenting, the malt drink hooch is considerably better than any of other fruit juice or plain sugar wash. next trying a protein supplement drink. wish me luck and thanks for the hilarious replies, i did chuckle

For what it's worth, tomato paste wash, or TPW, is not normally made for drinking, there's another, ahem, step in the process involved.

But I am believer in anything with sugar and yeast could ferment, just because it can doesn't mean it will taste good.
Years ago, after doing some building work at a factory that made drinking cordial, I noticed a 5l container of lime squash, bulging out, so I stuck an airlock on it and let it ferment out.
Rank does nothing to describe it lol

Cheers TC

... OK, but like Clint says fruit juice wines/ciders are bound to end up tasting better than whatever you're fermenting now ... have a look at the thread on here entitled Supermarket Juice Wine Recipes and Wurzels Orange Wine (WOW) (link) for ideas :?:

The only thing I've ever fermented (other than bread dough) with bread yeast was a Joe's Ancient Orange Mead (link) , I presume you can get hold of honey? With that the orange and the spices seem to "disguise" any of the flavours thrown by the bread yeast (or who knows maybe they compliment it) ... the batch I made ended up quite drinkable and 13.5% ABV athumb..

Cheers, PhilB

Im at a loss to think what your situation actually is.!!!!:?:

Truth is its really hard to poison yourself with homebrewing,Except by possible massive overconsumption.

Supermarket fruit juice (or any fruit juice) is the tastiest way forward,And will ferment quite well with bakers yeast
