Interesting article. But as far as customs checks, goods ultimately have an origin, and a final destination - both of which will be in either one country or the other, and it doesn't really matter if they go in, out and shake it all about en route. So a GPS based tag system could record all of that quite easily?
So how do you suggest they monitor the movement of people. Was that not one of the main driving factors of Brexit to take back control of your borders to stop free movement

Those 'few weird rules' are a customs border between Northern Ireland & the rest of the UK. That would mean a defacto united Ireland.
The Unionist community in Northern Ireland would feel betrayed & abandoned if this were to happen. God knows where that could lead.

How rarely the Good Friday agreement or the Irish Border was mentioned or understood by the Tories is very worrying.

The Conservative party seems to be morphing into a English Nationalist party with little to no interest in Scotland or Northern Ireland.

Boris Johnson seemingly wants to be a populist leader.
If this is true he will attack the BBC & the civil service, any source of opposition to his version of the truth.

I hope I'm wrong, but I am quite worried.

I use the Term 'A few weird rules' as I'm not sure anyone really knows at this stage exactly what will happen. Seems a bit like Schrodinger's cat to me, there is both a border and yet no border. :confused.:

Unless, Post-Brexit negotiations (due to end December 31st 2020) the British sign up to basically remain in the Customs Union, there would need to be a border, either in the Irish Sea or between the Republic & Northern Ireland.

There is no appetite in the Republic to leave the EU.
To put it mildly, most people have been bemused by the event in the UK the last few years.

Brexit, in whatever form it takes, will have a real effect on the economy of Ireland, both North & South.

I'm sorry, I see no evidence on this forum or from Conservative politicians, any understanding or interest of the effect of Brexit on Northern Ireland.

I don't think it's a case of everyone not caring it's the fact that no one knows what is going to happen and itay not turn out as bad as some are predicting.

I think you may find that the Irish government will soften its demands now that Brexit is definitely going ahead rather there being a chance it would not. Perhaps they thought they could stop it, certainly at one point they nearly did. And I got the impression at one stage that a few million people in the ROI were holding the whole negotiating position to ransom with their requirements, supported by a grudging EU. Anyway lets see if I am proved wrong.

Wrong, on so many levels.
Just wrong.
Wrong.
Wrong!

From the evidence from the comment of Terrym, I respectfully disagree.

Best of luck lads with Brexit.

For the craic, maybe google some Irish Newspapers for reactions over here.
Or don't.
Your call

I did. Yesterday. The Irish Times presented a very jaundiced view on matters as far as I could see. But then its entitled to because it needs to pander to its readership.

Pandering to it's readership????

Cool.
Nice.

Did you do the crossword. Apparently it's very good.

Why are Ireland seen as bad guy here they are just another member of the EU. The fact that the stupid Tories never considered the Irish border is not their fault. Brexit will end badly with the U.K. Breaking up but the financiers don't care and there is no chance of a trade deal without free movement of labour.

Depressing looks like another 5 years of Tory recession, how can people vote for Boris.
Not to stir things up, but people don't read the manifestos. Most people I know go off "who they like".

I saw a news anchor ask someone in Wales "Boris Johnson has been fired for lying twice, it's just been discovered the claims he made yesterday on National TV aren't true, how do you feel about that?"

And she replied along the lines of "I quite like it, i shows he's willing to do whatever to get the job done".

As I get older I'm convinced we need a benevolent dictatorship.....

And sadly we are going the way Trump did. Money will buy you anything, even election.

Trump said he didn't pay any taxes and people were saying how smart he is, to outsmart the taxman. Of course everyone forgot that from same taxes public services are being funded.

And possibly same will happen in UK, public services will not be funded, but BJ will claim it is someone's else fault, there will be some kind if excuse. School are already falling apart, pupils are being asked for money for photocopying and such. I know I work in the school ! I hope we will be better funded, so far it doesn't look like we will.

Took mine to the post office about three weeks ago. It was a lovely sunny morning.
I see it didn't make much difference to what the old country has now become. No excuses now, England's shown it's true colours and I fear for the young and the climate. Time for decent folk to leave, I think. It's nice over here, and Scotland's a lovely place, too. Glad the £'s gone up. We'll make the most of that. I'd be surprised if it stayed there very long.
If you don't like it here it's simple go and live somewhere else.

@the_quick I work in the NHS and my wife works in education. It's fair to say we're obviously Labour supporters, because they're the only party that invest in public services and we see people at their most vulnerable. I think seeing what's genuinely important on a regular basis gives you a different world view to people who get their info from teh telly. That said if you vote differently from me, I'm going to discuss it with you, I'm not going to call you an idiot, I'll only ask you why?

My main concern about the current state of affairs isn't the difference it's the whole 88% of public claims made by the Conservative Party are lies, falsehoods and fabrication. They lied to the general public, got into power and will not be held to account, I think this should genuinely terrify any rational human.
