To go back to the discussion on sports performance I had earlier in the thread with @strange-steve anecdotally I have noticed I get a lot less lactic acid in my quids when cycling since going vegan. This really helps with hill climbing as recumbents arent verg good at that (you cant stand on the pedals), so I'm able to spin the pedals for much longer periods of time without my thighs feeling like their going to explode.
I have heard veganism is good for endurance and also recovery. I haven't really looked into it though, so haven't any science to back this up (or indeed dispell it)
There is some evidence that high animal protein diets are not great for before a training session and links to reduced gut biodiversity. If you're interested in this can dig some papers out if you like?

I buy Halal chicken. I find that they are bigger and better looking than the battery chickens.

Can't say I understand that. Helal is a method of slaughter, battery is a system of raising hens. The two aren't mutually exclusive?
Halal covers a lot of items, shoes, washing powder, malt extract when I was in Sri Lanka there was a Muslim protest as they even wanted halal cement. When they got it they celebrated.

I'm probably the only forum member who is an actual meat producer - we run a small sheep farm. But we still regularly eat meals that are meat free. Note - meat free, not vegetarian. It's not the same thing, the first being the food you're currently eating, the second being a philosophy.

Halal is to Muslims what kosher is to Jews. Halal means permitted. The opposite is haram. So halal refers to lots of things, not just meat and poultry.

No idea, maybe they were building a mosque, the police killed 4 of the protesters though. I didn't believe washing powder was halal until I looked on a packet when I got back to Australia.
Certain manufacturers pay large sums of money to permit them to display a 'Halal Certified' logo on their products, which allows them to sell said products into muslim countries and communities. This has nothing to do with ritual slaughter, religious blessings etc., but just guarantees that no porcine DNA is present in the products.

The money received is used to fund 'islamic charities', which fund the likes of the building and running of mosques and islamic schools, islamic healthcare and poor relief. It is also claimed that it additionaly funds the conversion of non-muslims to islam and fighting of religious causes 'by the pen, word or sword'.

I was referring to halal certification, which is used on a wide variety of products, such as those mentioned above in Foxy's earlier post. Ritual slaughter does not play a part in the manufacture of for example washing powder.
Sorry, I misunderstood you.

Can't remember who asked but I saw someone mention they weren't sure what "banting" was. It's basically the low-carb high fat gimmick, sorry diet (LCHF). It's as it sounds, not much carbs but plenty of fat so most blokes see it as carte blanche to eat tons of meat a day and pretend they're Conan. Its kind of at the opposite end of the dietary extreme to veganism and the people who promote it are equally as dogmatic as vegans.

Isnt that the 'keto diet?' Basically a new and improved atkins diet. I do the opposite, high carb low(ish) fat

Yep, that's exactly what it is. They call themselves "banters" though, no idea why. Just makes the whole thing sound even more cult-like imo haha

I follow some of the intermittent fasting reddits and combining a keto diet with fasting is very popular but I've never heard anyone call themselves a banter. Keto does work for weight loss but personally I think it's very unhealthy and is just storing up problems for the future (heart disease, stroke, cancer, etc)

One of the first things I learnt when studying dietetics and nutrition generally, is to many people, their chosen food regime or 'diet' is much like a religion. HFLC, Atkins, Veganism, Sugar is Satan, whatever, invariably you get the same response if you attempt to be the voice of reason, ~ high scientific principles will be deployed to find faults in other cults, sorry I mean Diets, but won't be applied to their chosen one, imaginary bogeymen will be deployed to suggest some kind of huge conspiracy 'big sugar, etc etc', and pseudo scientific waffle will abound.

I once had a 'discussion' with someone who suggested that the laws of physics didn't apply to the human body, only to 'steam engines'. Obviously, the particular law of physics in question had to be disregarded for their cult, sorry again, 'Diet' to make any sense.

Its pretty depressing really.

I'd defiantely agree with that but I'd also include the standard western diet in your anaysis of 'diet' as relegion. (i.e. loads of processed food. Loads of meat and dairy. Low fruit, veg and fibre).

I like your phrase "chosen food regime" and shall nick it, as the word diet usually implys you're trying to lose weight and on my personal 'chosen food regime' I'm not trying to lose weight as I'm within my healthy weight for my height. I'm just trying to eat healthier
