Hi Guys,

I was wondering if I can sterilise any bottles I have available whenever I'm cleaning any other kit and seal with plastic resealable bottle caps that have also been in the sterilising solution, so the bottles are ready the next time I want bottle my brew.

I use sodium percarbonate to sterilise my kit in case that fact is relevant.

Thanks,

Mark

It is possible and similar to what I do but I do give then another quick rinse in starsan when I want to use them takes a few minutes only and drain just to be safe

Hi Mark Sodium Percarbonate is a cleaner and not a steriliser I think it is the chemical they use in Oxi Clean. That is fine to clean them but you must rinse all traces off the bottles and then you need to use a steriliser once clean. I would do as you are i.e cleaning them rinse well cap and store but only once they are drained fully as you do not want to cap with any moisture in them. When you want to use them you then need to sterilise before use, I use Starsan but at the moment I believe it is hard to get hold of in the UK. Ps Starsan is a no rinse steriliser. If you search the forum you find many threads to read that will help you re sterilising bottles

Thanks for the further info, the sodium percarbonate was supplied as part of a starter kit and while it is listed as a sanitiser the instructions say about cleaning the bottles in it and draining them then filling the bottles within 60 mins, I've since bought but not yet used Wilko bruclens cleaner and steriliser made by muntons for Wilko, the only listed ingredient is sodium percarbonate !

Is this subject the equivalent to a oil or tyre thread on a car or bike forum where everyone one has a different opinion ?

I'm not arguing as I know very little and I'm here to learn, I'm just a little confused !

Thanks again,

Mark

Yes people will have different views so I would read some of the cleaning/sterilising threads on this forum then you can make a decision on the info given . Good luck

This subject comes up from time to time and as you say its one where members have different views I think most clean their bottles thoroughly after use than sanitise on bottling day.

Will do , I appreciate you taking the time to help a nubie with the basics, this is my new hobby and I'm hoping that by doing my research I will succeed.

Hi, the Range, Mangrove Jacks and many other brands sell a combined “no rinse” sanitizer, cleaner and deodorizer, all of which are sodium percarbonate under the covers. When Starsan became unavailable I used it to clean and sanitize and never ever had an infection. Now that Chemsan, a Starsan alternative became available, I now use sodium percarbonate to clean and Chemsan to sanitize. Sodium percarbonate’s ability to sanitize degrades within an hour so it’s good practice to sterilize close to bottling time whatever chemical you use.

Thanks, that's a bit reassuring ! My first two brews are in bottles with me having used the sodium percarbonate that was supplied with the starter kit.

I sanitise my bottles in advance and cap them. I rinse with tap water just before use. Never had a problem. I use percarbonate as a steriliser.

I'm pretty new and the guy in the shop sold me this sodium percarbonate based product as a no rinse sanitiser: When I then started doing more reading, I see people tend to use Star San or Chem San which has a longer 'life' once diluted.

I've done four brews using Sure San, sterilising tubes, buckets, lids, pots, taps, bottles, caps etc and not had a problem so far. That said, I don't re-use the solution, so I don't use it past the hour or so once I've mixed it. I still have loads in the tub, so I will continue to use it until it's gone or until I start getting issues using it.

I will likely upgrade to Star/Chem San once it's used up, but it seems to be doing the job so far.

If I could give you any new advice for bottling, get one of these https://brew2bottle.co.uk/collections/bottling-aids/products/33cm-bottling-stick and one of these https://brew2bottle.co.uk/collections/cleaning-equipment/products/bottle-rinser

Cheers

Thanks UKSkydiver,
I got the bottling wand with the starter kit and I've bought a bottle washer and drainage tree.

It's good to know I'm on the right track.
