Hi

Does anyone have any old yeast? expired sell by or use by dates are fine.

Happy to make use of any old packets. (not for brewing)

Or perhaps you might know where I can go and collect some?

If you told us what you intended, we might be able to offer some suggestions. For example, if you knocked up a beer kit using a single sachet of yeast, you'd end up with hundreds of times the original yeast and a batch of beer to drink.
Welcome to the forum by the way.

Hello, thanks for the welcome!

It might sound like an odd request but....

I was hoping to get some old packets....to use them up and save them being thrown away into landfill. (I don't like wasting things)

It's for a science project I'm experimenting with trying to generate Co2.
I know I can harvest yeast from brewing (Which I do already) but I specifically wanted to try dried packet yeast.

I know students are meant to be skint but that's one strange request considering the price of dry yeast.
Saying that I have 5 packets your welcome to. IMG_20200316_225123697.jpg

It's for a science project I'm experimenting with trying to generate Co2.
Bread yeast generate tons of co2. I've force carbonated a keg using a "co2 engine" which is a 2 litre pop bottle with sugar, yeast and nutrient in it and it forced carbonated it faster than having a co2 regulator sat at 15 psi.

100 grams a quid from the supermarket.

What yeasts are they @samale? All pale? Did you not get on with it? I had a packet as part of a batch I bought and the pale was dead but the kolsh and real ale worked fine.

What I'm trying to do is use old yeast to generate Co2. Basically to use for purging purposes.
I'm essentially making a starter in a conical flask and using my old lab equipment to collect the Co2 and then store it under pressure for purging bottles and FV during bottling.
Any old packets that would otherwise be thrown away more than welcome.

Interesting JCR, I haven't seen those before.
I have seen the 'Co2 engine' and its quite close to what I am playing around with.
However, I'm trying to use up something rather than letting it go to waste.
Hence the 'old or out of date' dried yeast. I'm also interested in how active old yeast can be.
