I don't think a lot of folk realise we are now in uncharted waters, no one knows the right, or wrong way to approach the problem faced by the government, they may get it right or wrong,. They are just going to do their best. There is no political agenda, whats happened to the Dunkirk spirit the poms are famous for? We are all in this together.

Spot on Foxy, as I said in my earlier post by all means question the government's decision making in the thread but don't call it Boris's fault this is happening or blame him for the advice others have given the government.

Sorry, but I don't think that pointing out the incompetence of the UK Government is in any way "Boris Bashing"!

Boris IS the man in charge and he IS the man that is responsible for the actions of this Government ...

... plus I notice that today the Government is addressing a number of the points I tried to make, so maybe it was doing some good!

If you had called the decision making by the government wrong I wouldn't have deleted the two Boris bashing posts you recently posted (after i had asked everyone not to) he is the leader but he is obviously not making the decisions.
As I have said above by all means question the government's decision making but stop this annoying Boris bashing.

I wouldn't want to wear his shoes right now, I can picture him with his head in hands saying what the feck did I win, I think a lot of comments are sheer frustration and fear, we have to except we are going to lose loved one's friends and other folks we know, my mum in law is 86, next door are both in their 70s and are in serious ill health, I myself am 66 and have mild copd my wife has a low immune system, its not Boris's fault we should be helping all we can, this is probably the most sensible thing I have said for 30 years

I am 58 and in not too bad health so i wouldn't normally be too bothered about getting it but like you i have a wife who has health issues, all our parents are still alive and are all in their seventies with varying degrees of underlying health issues i have an awful feeling unless we are very very lucky the odds of losing one of them are heavily stacked against us.

Its about time all the knockers stopped the he said she said scenario and pulled together they can pick that mantle up once we are through this crisis but for time being just suck it up and work with what we have.
As I have said previously who knows which way is the correct way to go ( and there is not a expert on here at all no matter how correct you think you are!!!)but the government have chosen the one they deem the best they have not done it to kill as many people as they could for gods sake

Hope not Chippy

They are now keeping themselves to themselves but they were going shopping daily and meeting friends until fairly recently because they didn't have much of a store of food etc in the house (being only the two of them there) they are pretty internet savvy so online shopping will not be a problem, fingers crossed and not just for my parents.

I hope that all these selfish idiots that are ignoring the advice realise how serious that it is for the elderly and low immune people. I think it is a generation thing of if I get it it will not kill me so until then I'll carry on as normal. This is getting quite scary for some people. One of my work colleagues is 67 and diabetic and his wife is terrified as she has had cancer recently and her immune system is shot. I am not religious but pray in my head that they are kept safe as with the others

They are hoping because the morons have already stocked up they wont bother when the next lot of sanitiser etc hits the shelves my fear is the same morons will stock up again, they need to limit the number and enforce it, i wonder how they are going to police that.

Well we have now really started to limit items and contrary to the conspiracy theories flying around the supermarkets are not holding back items so they can allegedly control the supply and demand. If we get the item it is put on the shelf for sale.

Regards Sanitising gels I am going to repeat the things that I have been told from exterior forces who I know are a good source and this is not from my work or any other supermarket that the majority of sanitiser/cleaning supplies are be held back in case the NHS need them and not going into the usual supply system which does make sense and when I am talking about cleaning supplies I am meaning the professional strength stuff used by cleaning companies and not the usual diluted stuff on the supermarket shelf
So most large cleaning companies may soon be laying staff of as they can not clean without supplies

IKEA have just announced they are closing all stores for the time being i am glad they have announced it as wouldn't have noticed.

my local co-op are closing not sure why because people are posting pictures of their shelves full, including baby milk which is hard to get hold of.

I guess they have to protect their staff, we are no longer allowed to get out of our wagons at the weighbridge they now sign our paperwork as not signed and send it to our company.

Could be that one of the staff have tested positive, there's been a couple of cases where that's happened and the response has been to shut down for 48h or so while they deep clean the place. Going to be an increasing problem going forward.

We've had three suspected cases with plausible links to China and Italy, although not confirmed by testing.

As a micro pub I closed on Monday as soon as advise was for customers not to go to me, I just don't want it on my continence that people died due to me. I have 1 part time employee (3 days a week) who I have told I will pay all holiday pay he is owed this month. As far as I know I'm not compelled to do more but i'm not sure what I should on either a legal or moral basis. Just to note it's his second job as he is an on call only fireman.

They have since amended their post saying they are open daily but closing early at 8pm

We have one proper village shop for nearly 4000 population ( co-op.) Two towns at 15 and 40 miles distance return trip.
So far they have stayed open. But one has to feel for the undoubted concerns of the staff working there.
The village also has a large elderly population who rely on said shop.

For many over the coming months this shop will be almost as important as the NHS itself.

Perhaps someone can enlighten me?

Over the last few years a number of people have become "Self-Employed" simply because Employers didn't want to pay their NI Contributions, Pension Contributions etc. They were never "Self-Employed" really because some of them only ever worked for one Employer. (I'm given to understand, that some of these people even had Contracts that forbade them working for another Employer.)

This was condoned by the Government but it seems that now these people are being told to go on to Universal Credit if they have no work!

Also, what about the people who were working on a "Zero Hours Contract"? Again condoned by the Government but surely an Employer can't show a salary whereby the Government can hand over 80% of it. (We are back to the "Eighty percent of bugger all is bugger all." syndrome even if a salary can be produced.)

Finally, what about the people that formed their own Limited Companies? They weren't "Self-Employed" as such because they were employed by their own Limited Company.

Is there anyone out there who can answer these queries for me please? At the moment I'm confused but the "Self Employed" seem to be getting a rough deal.

PS

In my own case, (back in 1984) I had my own Limited Company but ran out of work. I was told by the Employment Exchange that I would have to fold my Limited Company to qualify for Dole.

I told them no thank you, found work a fortnight later and then paid myself £29.99 a week (or equivalent) as an Employee for the next twenty years. This meant that I paid no Income Tax and no National Insurance; all I had to pay was Corporation Tax and then the Dividends were tax free.

I put enough money in the bank to never need to grace the doors of the Employment Exchange ever again: for which I thank God!

I have seen the update on the Coronavirus bill which was discussed yesterday. It shows self employed will get 80% of their 3 year average wage to a maximum of about £2900.

Sounds promising but not sure why it wasn't announced.
