The number of people to have died with the coronavirus in the UK has reached 1,019.

The latest government figures on Saturday showed there were another 260 deaths in the UK in a day, up from 759 on Friday.

There are now 17,089 confirmed cases in the UK.

It comes as the government said it was ramping up testing for frontline hospital staff who have symptoms, or who live with people who have symptoms.

Critical care doctors and nurses will be prioritised first, with testing expected to follow for A&E staff, paramedics and GPs.

In Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, health workers are already being tested.

The new deaths include a further 246 people in England, with patients aged between 33 and 100 years old.

All of them had underlying health conditions except 13 people, who were aged 63 and over.

Scotland recorded a further seven deaths, bringing its total to 40, while four more people died in Wales, taking the total to 38.

In Northern Ireland, two further people with Covid-19 died, taking the toll to 15.

What is up with these people -

A man accused of spitting at police officers while claiming to have symptoms of coronavirus has been charged with assault.

Paul Leivers was arrested on Thursday in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.

Mr Leivers, 48, of Tideswell Court, has been charged with two counts of assaulting an emergency worker, and is due to appear before magistrates.

Police said the general response to social distancing in Nottinghamshire had been "phenomenal".

The government has introduced emergency legislation which means people can be fined for ignoring the measures.

However, police said this would be done only "as a last resort".

What annoys me most about this is the 'tougher sentencing should be there anyway. Emergency services are there to help the public but get assaulted every shift. At present offenders are getting more 'tougher sentences for saying they have cv19, before that came along the same people were saying they had hep b and aids. All assaults on emergency services should carry tougher sentences.

I hope after this is all over things like this are discussed and acted on.

Tesco order arrived today with only trivial substitutions. I think SWMBO pushed it right to the line on the 80 items as she wanted stuff for elderly relatives and siblings-without-foresight. Bit of a relief when it arrived.

The delivery guy, an elderly chap, asked us to keep the front door shut whilst he put it all in the porch, than tapped the door twice with a long cane and retreated behind the van whilst we took the stuff in.

At least it came in bags again, so easier to deal with.

Our asda delivery had a few items not in stock and a few replacements. Wife bought a ton of food, a lot for the neighbours. Strangely this week asda insisted they had to put the bags inside my house, into the hall. We had stopped them entering the house after one time the driver scrapped my wall with one of those trays. Luckily they paid for the damage.

Well the one person one trolley at my work has certainly helped the situation as the panic buyers will not queue outside for approx 20 mins to get that extra pack of toilet roll we also only allow a max of 50 people in store inc staff at anyone time. The majority of people are also trying to keep to the 2 metre rule whilst in store maybe the message is finally getting across we also do not allow people to buy small amounts of alcohol to stop the pizza and a bottle of wine/4 pack buyers who want to come in every other day to do the same we are encouraging customers to buy their weekly amount of alcohol with their weekly shop to stop the re-visits
athumb..

Went to aldi in Northwich this afternoon. Queued for about 15 mins left Mrs Cat in the car. It was one out one in controlled by one guy but not one trolley one person. Only shortage I could see was rice and hand sanitizer. People generally keeping 2 metre gap.

Got a crappy cold, does that count or is it definitely not a symptom? Haven’t got a headache. Rice and raisin wine still tastes good.

Symptoms are fever (high temp, 37.7 plus), dry cough and shortness of breath. If you have a runny nose it's probably just flu/cold.

He got 12 months in prison, i hope someone gobs in his face while he is there.

Just remember folks, soap and water is BETTER than any hand sanitiser. You don't need hand sanitiser unless you are somewhere without soap and water. Even then, you can protect yourself and family by wearing rubber gloves. These can be sanitised in a weak bleach solution.

The only problem with using soap if you live in a house with other people is drying your hands on towels, i know they say do not share towels if you have symptoms but my OCD will not let me use towels others in the family have as i think its a risk even though it probably isn't, hand sanitiser does the job quick and doesn't need drying so is my preference.
