hi guys,

Still new to this brewing game. By now I've made around 7 kits. Some good, some not so good.

I've currently got the above in primary and has been for around 6 days.

I made it with 1.2kg of mangrove jacks LME instead of brewing sugar.

Problem I have is I've been working from home in my brewing room and its bright in there so I put a t shirt over my FV to keep the light out. However the room got very warm and it seemed to smash through fermentation in a few days. It stopped after about 4/5 days, tested the gravity today and its stuck at 1016.

Is there anything I can do to perhaps kick-start it again?

Thanks guys.

Hi Guys,

Just checked again and it's still at 1016.

Ive just given it a fairly vigorous stir to aerate, lets see what happens.

If it stays at 1016 what do i do then?

Thanks

Hi @Andybiker, you really didn't want to aerate it at this stage as adding oxygen is not good after fermentation has started, you really need a layer of C02 in the FV to protect it. Have a taste is it sweet? does it taste like beer? what was the OG before adding yeast?.

Hi It started at 1048.

Just had a taste and it does taste like beer, little sweet but quite watery really.

Thanks

just to add, i was going to throw in 100g of Citra hop pellets as ive seen the addition of those start fermentation a bit before.

What do you think?

Thanks

You could add the hops but if it starts to ferment then they will be in there too long before it reaches 1.010 ish, I would add some more yeast if it was my beer, re-hydrated in cooled boiled water and stir it in gently and see what happens. This is just my opinion tho' others may disagree.

Thanks fella,

Any idea what type and how much to add?

I've only used kit yeasts up to now.

Thanks

If you haven't any yeast at all then it will be a couple of days until you receive any by post, any ale yeast will do the trick 11g, Wilko Gervin(depends on lockdown of course) I think is ok(not used it myself tho') but don't order Mangrove Jacks M44, not because it isn't good but it's a tad slow at getting started for most users and you will think it's not working.

I did this in March with the same lme addition. OG 1048. Conversely mine took 3 days to really get going, then another 2 weeks to reach 1020. I added hops via a hop tea at this point, made with 1 litre of 77 degrees C water left to cool and poured through a hop bag and sieve. It took another five days until it reached 1010. 20degrees C fairly consistent throughout.
I've found that the two week rule is sound, as recommended by the experienced hands found in this forum.
It really is a lovely pint, especially from a mini keg. athumb..

Hi mate.

I just used the kit yeast (no idea what type it was)

Thanks for all the advice. Maybe I should just chuck my hop pellets in and check in a couple of days.

Thanks again.

Eh up chaps,

So i chucked in my hop pellets 2 days ago now.

Just checked and the gravity is still at 1016.

Waddya reckon? Leave until weekend, test gravity and if the same bottle anyway?

How many days in the FV? Temperature? Mine was slow, took over 2 weeks.

It's been in primary now for 11 days with very varying temps between 19 degrees & 25 degrees.

But stopped bubbling and hit 1016 after around 4/5 days and is still at 1016 now.

I've got some yeast on the way, but i did give a big frothy stir a few days ago which it turns out was possibly the wrong thing to do.

Just tasted it and it tastes ok.
