Bloody amazing series...I was into basketball and American Football around the time so it was great watching it back..so many great players
I haven't a clue about basketball but you have to admire the talent. Scotty pippen was another man who was on top of his game

I see they have recently released 'The painted bird' as a movie, I read the book although widely acclaimed it was the most disturbing book I have ever read. Jerzy Kosinski the author committed suicide, coincidently another acclaimed book he wrote was 'Being there' which was made into a movie starring Peter Sellers. Still one of the best movies I have seen also starring Peter Sellers was 'Dr Strangelove' my favourite line, 'Mine Fuhrer, I can walk'

I thought Taika Waititi missed the mark here, sadly, especially as I really like his other stuff.
It certainly wasn't as good as Hunt for the Wilderpeople, but I still thought it was great!
The Irishman was at least half an hour, maybe a full hour too long
There's no doubt it's long, but I thought that added to the experience of growing old with the characters :laugh8: I didn't find it overlong though, I didn't find myself bored or looking at my watch at any point.
Rise of Skywalker was a mess, but not unenjoyable
I think a 12 year old boy with ADHD would love it, but I didn't enjoy it at all.
The main thing to take away from the new trilogy though is that a lot of Star Wars fans are terrible people.
For sure, that's true of many fandoms though

Watched these films on either Netflix or Amazon recently
21 Bridges - excellent
Annihilation- Ok
Wandering Earth (Chinese film) - ok
Bird Box - excellent

I really disliked 1917. I've studied WW1 since I did my GCSEs and there was so much that was inaccurate or unrealistic, the main performances were awful (what accent were the leads supposed to have?) and I found the single shot trick more off-putting than technically impressive. I went in really wanting to like it too, which made it all the more disappointing.
Fortunately I only watch Hollywood films for their entertainment value and not any historical or technical accuracy.
Otherwise I could go on and on about the climbing errors on cliffhanger and the huge plot holes in terminator 2.

I'm not talking about wrong buttons on tunics or any of that stuff (I'm not that much of a WW1 geek!), I was talking about stuff like walking out on no man's land into green fields apparently 50 yards behind the lines, then having a plane crash on the lead characters within moments. Also the lousy, lousy acting from the two leads. It looked great, and there were some decent supporting performances (Mark Strong was great as usual) but the rest left me bored and irritated!

I know I'm a saddo & have been watching all the old spaghetti westerns I could get my hands on. They are great in many ways even comedic when they weren't meant to be. That tune in The Good the Bad & the ugly still hold well today. They were made about a time when men where men & so where the women. A bit like a night out in leeds.

Tonybaloni have you seen ‘Terror of Tiny Town’? It’s possibly the best worst funny western ever made. I bet you can’t watch all of it 😂

As for 1917- I too was disappointed. The whole one-shot (which wasn’t) wasn’t worth the effort in my opinion. Still it kept me moderately entertained for a while.

No but it sounds very promising. I'll look for it. :laugh8:

I haven't posted here for a while so as an update here are 10 movies I watched recently with my 1 sentence review of them...

Drive
I loved this movie, it's so effortlessly cool with engaging characters and brilliant, intense action scenes.

Jojo rabbit
Like all of Taika Waititi's movies it's quirky, funny, sentimental, well written and just brilliant overall.

Dark city
An underrated sci-fi gem with interesting and original themes, incredible, creepy, atmospheric set design that's absolutely worth a watch.

The irishman
What can I say except that it's exaxtly as good as you'd expect with this incredible cast and Scorsese directing.

Apollo 11
Not a movie but a brilliant, nerve-wracking, fascinating documentary on the Apollo 11 mission, with no narration, just made up of real footage and dialogue.

Arrival
Another amazing and original movie by Denis Villeneuve who is leading the way in thoughtful and clever sci-fi like this masterpiece.

Knives out
After his swing and miss with The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson clawed back his reputation with this funny and interesting take on the classic whodunit which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Uncut gems
A hectic, fast paced and tense movie but the most amazing thing about this is that it's a good Adam Sandler movie, and not just good but really good.

An honest liar
Another fascinating and well made documentary, this time about the former magician James Randi who spent most of his life exposing faith healers, psychics, mediums and the like as frauds.

Rise of skywalker
An absolute mess of a movie with every scene just shoved full of stuff and noise, and the final nail in the Star Wars coffin as far as I'm concerned.

Anyone else watched anything good (or bad) recently?
Just watched "an honest liar" Thank you for that, really enjoyable documentary that I wouldn't have watched without you mentioning it.

Watched Heat last night again, forgot what a cracking movie that is!

Not so much a movie as a mini-series, but if you like sci-fi in an Ex_Machina/Annihilation vein, DEVS on BBC iPlayer is worth a watch.
