Tell you what Chippy i do the wrynose hard knott pas at least 3 times a year but always from the windermere side i may try the other side next time from the railway station athumb.. that road is not for the faint hearted

I haven't been on either in years, that was back in the day when we did our own car maintainance so failing brakes was always a worry, as you say not for the faint hearted.

South West Scotland is a little gem. The local people are very friendly and there's lots of retirees because property is so cheap. Stunning landscapes and wildlife too. I had to quit my regular job because of arthritis so we cashed our chips in 12 years ago, sold the house and bought a small cottage near Luce Bay. Living was so cheap we both retired at 55 and never looked back.

My biggest worry these days is how deep the trout are and what line to use to get a fly to them;)

And the bit I like most about it: there's nothing to spend money on......except fishing tackle and brewing beer.
It’s lovely there
We spent two weeks in a cottage at Port Logan and my kids loved it, a cracking wee beach at Ardwell bay and Portpatrick also

On the subject of lake district, I am going to push for Italy again. Just google Lake Como, Lake Garda, etc. These are exceptional lakes to see, interesting places around the lakes to visit, waters that are wonderful to swim in, great food, etc. I still think that Italy offers a better retirement.

I also think you will live longer. People think Italian's live longer because of their diet, but I suspect it's related to their attitude towards prevention. Seems totally normal to get a full range of tests done every 6-12 months.
As example: I had private blood tests done that included everything I could think of (hormones, vitamin D, etc). I did not need to make an appointment and I paid 50 euros. I also had a full range of tests on my heart with a leading surgeon for 130 euros privately. You can use the system and pay less.

I would second lake garda, one of my favourite holiday destinations. Where I stay as 2 breweries both making craft beers. Super markets have a good selection of European and American breweries. Great for cycling also.
