I have been putting a recipe together, which has a flameout addition and a hopstand addition. The software I am using (Grainfather) shows 0 IBU's from the flameout addition, but some from the 20 minute hopstand addition. Thinking this to be a quirk with this software, I repeated on Brewers Friend and got an almost exact outcome.

I can see three possibilities

1 The software is correct and no bitterness is extracted from the flameout hops, but some is from the hopstand hops, added later and at a lower temperture.
2 If a hopstand is carried out, all earlier hop additions should be removed.
3 The software lacks the subtlety to calculate the bitterness input from earlier additions when a hopstand is carried out.

Maybe I'm overthinking this, its only a relatively small number of IBU's after all. Has anyone else encountered this, or have any thoughts on how to overcome this?
 
Anything over 75° if I mind right will extract bitterness so basically anything over that will increase IBUs. There's a Basic Brewing vlog where James and Steve covered this where their brew was sent to lab to measure actual hop bitterness IBUs as opposed to the estimated IBUs from the software which may have been beersmith.

I use Beersmith and they sorted out this anomaly a while back. Zero minute additions get an IBU value estimated for them (and earlier additions get extra IBUs estimated for them too). The steep hops (hopstand, whirlpool, etc.) get their IBU contribution based on time and temperature they are added at.

Before they did this it was normal practice to always add steep hops as steep hops and not as zero minute hops.

The time used for estimating steep IBU contributions of early hops is set in the recipe's Equipment Profile. This from the BS "Help":
oWhirlpool Time - This represents the average time in the whirlpool or steeping (hot) before you chill your wort. It is used to calculate hop utilization when the box to carry over hops (below) is checked. Hops will still generate a small amount of IBUs when steeped at high temperature.
oEstimate Boil Hop Utility in Whirlpool - Recommended if using a steep/whirlpool stage before chilling. When checked, the program will attempt to estimate the remaining hop bitterness utilization for boil hops and carry those forward into the whirlpool. This becomes important when long whirlpool times are used or when working with the "no chill" brewing method, as these hops will continue to contribute some bitterness to the beer while the wort is still hot.

Thanks for the reply, I have played with the recipe and have estimated that I can get an additional 7 IBU's from the late additions, which brings it into the ballpark value I am looking for.
