I was just in my local Tesco and saw among the kitchen section a Wherry homebrew starter set.
The kit includes:
  • 25L FV with lid
  • Stirring spoon
  • Hydrometer
  • Cleaner/steriliser
  • Siphon and sediment trap
  • Wherry kit(3kg)

£40

I wonder if they have something going with Woodfordes now as in the beer aisle, they had bottled wherry, which I have never seen in a supermarket round my way before.

Woodeford kits are made by Muntons.
Tesco used to sell a fair range of homebrew stuff both online and in some stores but stopped about 3/4 years ago ending with a big sell-off sale. I even bought my now dead PBs from them (ah bless).

I guess someone in Tesco looked at what hobbies were increasing over the lockdowns & decided they could cash in on them for christmas.

People who get one for christmas may find they have to go somewhere else to buy their refill kits though.

Suspect they are mostly hoping to sell these as Christmas presents, curious what sanitiser they include with it, and if it is VWP how many people will be put off due to accidentally ruining a batch by not rinsing probably.

That said as starter kits go you can do a lot worse than Wherry.

Wherry is a pretty decent beer for a kit, but it will be rather better by Easter than Christmas.

£40 is hardly a bargain. You could do better in Wilko.

That may be the case Kelper but how many people who have never thought about making their own beer so wouldn't visit Wilko are going to pass these kits on a monthly shop and think they might give it a try, a smart move by Tesco and maybe if they sell well they may increase the range, as Terry said above they used to have a huge range of stuff online and the shrewd here used to wait for their quarterly sale to put a big order in, i used to stock up on 30 bottle wine kits to last until the next sale, i am not surprised the stopped selling home brew after a while. :laugh8:

Seen those woodford wherry starter kits in my local homebrew last year £75.00 then

I fancied getting into beers at the time but thought the king keg was a better barrel THEN i looked on here,
Oh the horror the horror.

Just shows how valuable forums like these are.!!!!!!
Even to "old hands" like myself.

I bought a Young's Microbrewery with a Woodfodes kit for £92 in 2017. It was a 'deluxe' and included a genuine KingKeg top-tap PB from eBay. It had airlock, spoon, S30 pin valve, CO2 bulb and holder, VWP sanitiser, LCD thermometer, Alla hydrometer and trial jar.

Wilko sell Woodfordes Wherry kit for £20. FV and lid £10. Hydrometer £3.50. 1kg of OxiPlus £2. Delivery £5 even to the Highlands!

It was more for a nosy if anything as I have enough grain to last for at least a dozen brews and besides her indoors would go nuts but Cheers anyway.
Seen these in either the Lisburn store or one of the Belfast Tesco. If it's in Lisburn (the Metropolis!), It'll be in Derry.

It might get here but went over to get a few things last night and had a nosy but nothing. As I have said I was just being nosy and have no need but knowing me I might take one if it was there just to try it...
