I haven't actually gone to see my mum, who's banged up in a nursing home (where they allowed her to become infected) since March. It must be hell in there. Thank God I bought her a bespoke comms device in 2018 which can do auto-answering video calls. Without that, she'd be on the "15 minute call to the staff PC (if available)" routine once a day max. If anyone's interested in the device, let me know.

We've been put in tier 4, despite cases dropping to tier 2 levels. To get to the T4 level area, you need to go 42 miles south, or 42 miles west (spooky!). Cant see the logic in that, if I'm honest - bit of a broad brush, especially as the hospital I would be taken to (about 20 miles North) if I were to get ill is staying in Tier 3, so it can't be a capacity thing. Ah well.

They are now saying they are going to delay the second jab of the Pfizer vaccine from 12 weeks despite there not being much evidence the 1st dose does much on its own. This seems to be just to ensure more people have some protection quicker.

They're just doing their sums, and factoring in issues such as the current rate of transmission. It's inferred that the single dose is over 52% efficient (https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2034577). As you say, so more people have some protection.
OK it makes sense on some level but the article claims for those who already have an appointment for the second jab its more work to cancel the appointment than give them the second jab.
I'm sure it is, but there's an awful lot of other work going on to reduce the infection rate, of which this change is part, and only a limited supply of vaccine at the moment. So it's either "wasted" work, or more individuals vaccinated. The latter wins.

The UK has reported another 55,892 daily cases of coronavirus, setting a new record.
And another 964 people died within 28 days of a positive test, only slightly down on the 981 on Wednesday.
Hospitals in London, Essex and Buckinghamshire are reporting that they are under extreme pressure because of increasing numbers of Covid patients.
It comes as 20 million more people in England are placed under the toughest restrictions and told to stay at home.
The new restrictions mean 44 million people, or 78% of the population of England, are now in tier four, where non-essential shops, gyms, cinemas and hairdressers have to stay shut.
Public Health England medical director Dr Yvonne Doyle said Christmas week had seen a worrying rise in cases particularly among adults in their 20s and 30s, adding "we must not now add further fuel on the fire" by meeting in groups for New Year's Eve.
"We have all had to make huge sacrifices this year, but please ensure that you keep your distance from others, wash your hands and wear a mask," she said.
"A night in at new year will mean you are significantly reducing your social contacts and can help stop the spread of the virus."
The 981 deaths recorded on Wednesday was the highest daily figure since April.
