    Flavour left over in FV

After cleaning the second fv there was no obvious ginger smell so I figure that's a good sign. I've got an IPA in there now so itll be a while before I can see if that ginger flavour makes it through.

    Flavour left over in FV

I'm going to see how this once turns out. The othe FV though, I'm going to try and clean up with a weak bleach solution. I asked a friend who works as a microbiologist about it as I figured he'd be used to cleaning this kind of kit and he'd know if the bleach would hurt me (I grew up with scary...

    Flavour left over in FV

So why the prevalence in plastic FVs? Apart from being cheap to make, fairly robust and lightweight (answering my own question). You wouldn't think they would be so easy to ruin! For future reference, has anyone else come across beer types that have a tendency to leave flavour in the FV?

    Flavour left over in FV

Thanks guys. I wasn't expecting such a fast reply so I went ahead and made the kit I had. I've had it a few months so it needed using anyway. I'll see how this ends up and make a decision after. It's a pain as I made 80 pints of the ginger beer at the same time so I used 2 FVs. The ginger and...

    Flavour left over in FV

Hi guys, I've been away from brewing for while mostly out of laziness. But stock is running low and the wife has gone to bed so I've decided to have a crack at a bitter kit I've been meaning to do for a couple of weeks. My penultimate brew was a rather strong ginger beer (7.5%) thst wasn't...

    Archetypal Beers

Ha I take that back. The first link I clicked on on that page was only English beers.

    Archetypal Beers

Thanks. I had seen this. I was hoping for some personal recommendations. The brewing software I use links to this but it seems like a lot of American examples?

    Archetypal Beers

In order to improve my knowledge of beer styles I was hoping to get some recommendations from other forum members. I would like to know what you think is the archetype of a particular style of beer, although not nessecarily your favourite. I plan on trying the first beer recommended for each...

Have a go at simple AG

One of my favourite things about it is, although it is a long process, you can still get on with your day. Like right now I am brewing beer.. but I'm also taking the dog for a walk.

Also I really have caught the bug. I just ordered another few bags of grain and a sparging bag. I have some grain leftover from last week so I'm going to get another small batch on now. Thank you for putting this post up. It was a fantastic motivator into making an AG brew.

Have a go at simple AG

I accidentally bought a Maris Otter pale blend to have a go with this but I've just taken a gravity reading and it has turned into a lovely hoppy, proper beer. I'm quite proud of myself and it is very satisfying to follow the process from grains into beer. It's been in the FV for a week and I'll...

    Newbie

I got going with this starter kit for 35 quid with bottles. It has pretty much all you need. http://www.home-brew-online.com/starter-kits-c47/beer-lager-c50/hbo-standard They have some new starter packs now with a beer kit for not too much more.

    Re-using crown caps

I buy boxes of 40 PET bottles from homebrewonline.co.uk at about a tenner a box. The screw tops are reusable, it just takes a little while to screw them all on once bottled. Also they're not the smartest things to give as gifts or to guests. But they're cheap and do the job.

Have I just been lucky so far?

Haha no I'm in the sunny south west. It's been really warm recently but I went in yesterday afternoon and it had gone down to about 14c. I'm guessing from your reply that that sort of drop in temp shouldn't make too much of a difference? The FV is out in the garage so I keep the heater running...
