I have found the problem with some local shops is that they focus on kits rather than all grain and therefore they do not turn over their malt and hop stocks very often. Fresh ingredients are more important to me than price.
I keep my grain (whole and crushed) in a plastic bin with a lid and I place one of THESE demudifiers on top of the bags of grain in the bin to keep it dry.
Obviously do not use the fragranced versions....
+1 for TheMaltMiller. I think the only ingredient Rob might not have is the Chocolate Wheat but for the sake of only 50g I think you could easily sub it for another roasted malt. I would go for one of the Carafa Special dehusked malts.
He has a light munich by Weyermann
Check out out these two videos on malting at home:
PART 1
PART 2
Part 1 has good tips on checking that the grain has sprouted enough.
Part 2 answers your question about 5mins 30 secs into the video - apparently the sprouts have high protein content and it is better not to include it in the...
Its funny how a hop can give so many different impressions.
I wanted to try out Cluster so I used them in an extract brew using light DME and steeped crystal. I only did a 15min boil and used the whole 100g pack at 15, 5 and 0 min stages. It turned out really well with the hops giving a lovely...
I recently upgraded from a corona type grain mill to a roller mill bought from The Homebrew Shop in Aldershot. It is listed on their website HERE. I thought I would post a little review in case it helps anyone else looking to buy one.
Anyway here are some pics and my thoughts so far.....

That wasn't my brew was it Rob? I seem to remember dropping you off a bottle or two last year...? Nice to see you have more in stock this year!
This is the recipe that I used with Wai-Iti:
Wai-Iti Pale (Blonde Ale)
Original Gravity (OG): 1.049 (ðP): 12.1
Final Gravity (FG): 1.012 (ðP)...
I dodn't think Wadworth 6X has chocolate malt in it but it does have crystal malt.
I would replace the chocolate with crystal and maybe a very small amount of black malt for colour...
I have used this method several times for extract brews and it works really well.
It means you end up using more hops to get the IBUs required but then again adding hops in the last 15 or 20 minutes is something that some craft brewers in the US have done to good effect. Obviously when going...
Welcome on board riverjunky!
1 How do I add yeast? Chuck it straight in or mix with water? - You will find opinion is split on this as some sprinkle it dry and others rehydrate. If you sprinkle then make sure you don't just add it in one clunp - spread it over the surface. If you rehydrate...
I am thinking of buying a hop plant this year just to wind the wife up a bit more.... .
I was going to get a centennial rhizome when they become available in a few weeks but then I thought I should go for something that I can't get hold of as easily.
Aplus Hops are doing Omega hop...
Sounds like a fun recipe. That amount of coffee sounds like it should be too much so it will be really interesting to hear how it turns out.
I am confused by the donut reference though - was donout used in the brew at some point? :wha:
