advice for newbies: have a plan for a blow-off tube

All the beginner guides and particularly the kits, recommend/provide airlocks. This is, presumably, because they are simple and easy to understand and use. I went through my first 3 brews using only airlocks without problems. I'm sure this wont be news for the experienced brewers here, but at...

    Festival kit instruction confusion

FWIW I tried nutrient and nothing changed. I've kegged it now because 🤞 , but I fully expect it to be nasty.

    Festival kit instruction confusion

Thanks for the advice. I pitched when I got the temperature below 25c, its possible that some of the wort was hotter, but probably not by much. If I had to guess, then I suspect this is where the problem lies. I'm fermenting at 22-23 because the instructions said keep between 20c and 25c...

    Festival kit instruction confusion

I'm brewing the Festival Belgian Pale ale, and the instructions for kegging / bottling are confusing to me as a relative newb. The instructions say that if I'm kegging I should transfer into the keg after a specific amount of time, irrespective of the SG. It also assumes using the included...

    beer tap spanner?

Built myself a kegerator, only to discover that I apparently need (yet another) specialised tool. The 'nut' that tightens the tap onto the shank is cirular with holes equally spaced. It looks like I need something like this: Larcele Hook Wrench for Nut, Side Adjustable Spanner YYBS-01 (Round...

does long fermentation imply anything bad?

Thanks @the baron and @Agentgonzo for the info and guidance, things to remember for next time.

does long fermentation imply anything bad?

I've ordered a hydrometer which should be easier to read for the next brew. I kegged today, and this is what the beer looked like on top when I opened it. Looks good to me, and it smelled OK. Fingers' crossed.

does long fermentation imply anything bad?

Interesting. Thanks. For my own information, why? I (mis?) understood the point of measuring the FG was to either calculate the ABV (if you have the OG) and/or to know when the fermentation had finished based on a recipie/kit's known target FG. The instructions on this kit just specify...

does long fermentation imply anything bad?

OK, just took a sample and it doesn't taste foul. It could be strong, but I might just be imagining it. I measured it with my traditional floating hydrometer, which although isn't very precise suggests that the ispindel isn't far off; I read it at about 1.004, but it is difficult to read. I...

does long fermentation imply anything bad?

Honestly don't know, it was the one that came with the kit.

does long fermentation imply anything bad?

I'm currently brewing my 2nd beer kit, a Woodforde's Bure Gold. The instructions say 7-10 days fermentation, but its been 15 days now and it is still slowly bubbling away. I also have an ispindel in there: I suspect the numbers themselves are out, because I didn't calibrate it myself (it was...
