    Electric apple scratters

I bought an unused Bosch garden shredder on FB Marketplace for £40. It was a bit of a bargain! Worked a treat. Took a bit of cleaning at the end but two of us cleaned apples and produced 45 litres of juice in 4 hours including cleaning up afterwards. Had to chop the apples in half to get them in...

    How to make Somersby style?

NoT much interest here - not too surprising as Somersby is not something I would drink through the winter but over ice in a hot summer day…… Anyway, after a bit more reading I’m heading towards getting to the desired level of fermentation (residual sweetness), racking into a secondary vessel to...

    How to make Somersby style?

In Portugal this year we tried Somersby, a sweet fizzy cider that was served over lots of ice with a couple of lemon slices. Not what I would normally go for but it was SO refreshing in the hot weather. I have only made cider once before. I bottled it with a little sugar for fizz and some...

    Peco cutting out

It was plugged into to an extension cable but I ensured that was fully unwound. I’ll get some pictures of the controls shortly…….

    Peco cutting out

Thanks for the replies. This is the bog standard Peco - no digital display, an exposed element (not hidden beneath a cover and therefore sitting in the wort) and a dial with 1-10 markings. The element is clean, as far as I can see and I do clean beneath with a pan scrub, but maybe I need to feel...

    Peco cutting out

In another thread I said that the Peco was the best brewing kit I’d bought as it got me started on my all grain adventure. Which is true, however I’m having a problem with it. On the first and third (latest) boil the Peco cut out. The second time I used It I had a perfect rolling boil. After it...

    Best thing you ever purchased

Thanks Rod…… We are tortoises though - set off from Scotland in 2016 and will only get to Portugal this year (been in Galicia, NW Spain 4 winters now, 2 more than intended because of Covid). We don’t do you tube but there are lots of pictures on the blog HERE (the format is not working at the...

    Best thing you ever purchased

I feel a new thread coming along - “Show us your best metal detector find”. Maybe not, but I need to know what yours is please Clinf?

    Best thing you ever purchased

Brewing wise - the Peco boiler that allowed me to start the all grain journey. But no competition for the best overall category - our second home that keeps me away from brewing for 5 months a year! (The one on the left)

    Dry hopping

I don’t dry hop until I think fermentation is finished. I’ve put them in before when I think it’s going to be finished within a few days only for fermentation to continue very slowly for another 2 weeks! I once used a bag so I could remove them, but was amazed at how much the pellets swelled up...

    Mash efficiency

Well I found it interesting, having not seen this thread before, and having recently wondered what my efficiency is. Is there an easy way to calculate it Mike? I prefer slightly less alcoholic beer than the seeming trend towards high 5 % and above, so have not been too concerned if I finish a...

    Cheap long term wine storage?

Around here glasswear goes out on the street in an open top box. I did suggest walking - at night. You could even wear a balaclava if you’re shy. 😁 Maybe eBay then. I saw 27 screw top wine bottles on there earlier at £5. There are chancers on there looking for silly money for used wine bottles...

    Cheap long term wine storage?

Why don’t you wander around your neighbourhood the night before the recycling van arrives? Or get friends to save their bottles for you? Am I missing something?

    Swing bottles or caps

I have built up a good stock of swing tops, well over 100. I have done that because I think they’re cool. However I would say that crown caps are easier if you are a cleaning enthusiast like me 😒 - because removing the sealing ring, cleaning and replacing takes longer than chucking crown caps...
